While battlefield desecration/destruction is not new, I thought that Forum members would find this to be interesting, nonetheless. Back in the '90s, as my wife & I were finishing our self-guided tour of the Petersburg battlefield, we saw an adult & several teens, all armed with metal detectors, jump out of a van & fan out across the area. We reported this to the Park Service authorities, but never knew what happened after that.

Infuriating. Perhaps one of the dug bullets should be used on this loser's head. -- Al

Thanks for the link. I'm afraid this sort of thing is spreading. In recent years on the old Western front, as well as metal detecting, there have also been incidences of people actually digging up graves of the long buried soldiers for their buttons and other unifom parts, the fact that this is a family forum prevents me putting in words just what I think of these people.

That's a shame that happens. When I was 12 in 1958 we were on our way to Florida by car and stopped off in the Petersburg area overnight. In the morning we stopped at the site for a quick look. I believe it was in the early stages of its excavation, but it certainly got my toy soldier playing attention. I've always wanted to go back at some time to see it; as it must be an awesome site by now. Thanks for putting that up for us Sans Culotte.
