Just thought I'd start a discussion on battlefields you may have visited- voluntarily or involuntarily ;)

Looking back, not sure I have actually been to any??? Guess Gettysburg- drive through there all the time, stepped foot on the fields once or twice but never really took the grand tour. Guess we went to some when I lived in Germany but sight were more of battles rather than large campaigns.

Anyone? I know Rob posted pictures a year or so ago of DDay beaches.

Would really enjoy seeing some pictures too- especially of places not so well known- Stirling Bridge in Scotland, Sekighara in Japan, I dunno.

Gettysburg, Valley Forge, and the old Meadowlands ice. :D

I've been by the River Raisin too, but there weren't any signs or anything designating a battle field.

Not much of a traveler so the only battlefields I have visited are ACW. Been to Gettysburg many, many times. Sharpsburg a few times (none real recently). Been to Manassas, Chatanooga (sp?), Mobile Bay (the forts), Monocacy, and several forts in DC and Baltimore, if that counts. That's about it. Oh, and I have also been to Yorktown (Thanks for the memory jog, Jim). -- Al

Now you're talking my friend!.:)

So far I've been lucky enough to visit the Somme, Passchendaele, Verdun, Ypres, Mons, Dunkirk, Waterloo, Normandy, Hastings, Bosworth field. Still want to go to Gallipoli and maybe Pearl Harbour. My good lady is promising to take me back to Normandy this summer too.:)

Hi Jim,

I think we should clarify that we weren't actually at the battle in 1066 but visited the battlefield in 2008. :D:D

How are you doing?

Btw, I wonder what became of those plastic figures that Ron Barzo left around the Abbey?

There wasn't any doubt in my mind you were at Battle....Culloden on the other hand....:D:D

Your visits to Masada and Thermopylae are life long dreams of mine. I also want to get to some of Rob's stops- Omaha, Verdun, PDale, etc.

And of course, Stirling Bridge

Thanks for the pics guys.
Anyone particularly fond of any of the other fields? Gettysburg is notorious for all the "ghost" walks, rides, jaunts, etc.

Thanks to Wendy for reminding me of Valley Forge too :) I have been there too.

Thank you Chris! :p:D

We opted for the cable car and not the goat path as it was so hot. Only when you are at the top in the fortress can you actually wonder how the Romans managed to build that ramp!

I'm jealous of you guys. I would love to get to WW1 battlefields and would also like to see Thermopylae. Never going to happen, but I can dream. -- Al

@Al... Never say never! I didn't think I would ever get to England, but an opportunity came up in 2008.. I didn't really have the money - but I planned for it, saved for it, etc.. and made it happen... Don't regret a minute of it.

@Jeff... I've wondered about the plastic figures left around Hastings Battlefield as well. I have a couple of photos of them at home - along with about 1200 other pics of my trip to England!

Al, if you make it to the Somme and Ypres one day you will be really glad you did, loads to see and an atmosphere like no other.

Rob, I have read about those fields of battle since I learned how to read, (just a small stretch of the truth;)) and I would love nothing more than to visit the Somme, Verdun, Normandy, and any others I could get to. I want to stand on the bluffs over Omaha Beach and on the turrets of Ft. Douamont before I cash in. -- Al

Tell those kids of yours to get off their duff and pony up for their dad!! :p:D I'm more than sure you did everything you could for them- time to pay the piper!!:)

I enjoyed thinking about some of the great battlefields I have had the opportunity to frequent… ah the memories. I have been fortunate to see a few battlefields over the last few years, strongly helped by a couple of O/S postings.

Major Battlefields of note are:

Agincourt & Waterloo.

WWI - Bullecourt, Pozieres, Villers-Bretonneux, Fromelles, Amiens, Messines, the Somme, Passchendaele, Verdun, Ypres, Hamel, last but not least Gallipoli.

ACW – Gettysburg, Battle of the Wilderness, Antietam, Manassas, Fredericksburg, New Market.

AWI – Bunker Hill & Yorktown (I lived in Newport News for a couple of years, so it is literally just up the road). Cheers, Alby

Do it my friend! I've stood at Serre on the Somme as the sun comes up on the first of July and the atmos just knocks you out, you can almost hear those whistles blow, not afraid to admit i had a lump in my throat. I also walked up Omaha beach when the tide was out, and to this day I don't know how any of those young heroes got off that beach alive. The cemetery above is well worth seeing, very moving indeed. Another of my faves is that railway bridge at Mons where Godley and comrade held up the Germans with their m/gun and won the first VC's of WW1 .

Then there's the nightly last post at the Menin gate in Ypres..blimey I could witter on all night..go visit them Al you'll love it mate!

Oh and I walked on Pegasus bridge...ok shutting up now!!:D
