best war museums (1 Viewer)

Hi Mike
This is the museum to visit, I was fortunate to go there 3 times in the mid 1990's.

There are several Regimental museums that feature various Colonial War related displays. I plan on visiting The Royal Logistics Corps Museum at Deepcut as they currently have a Zulu War Exhibition, the museum is only a few miles from where I live. The RLC was formed in 1993 from various British Army units, Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Corps of Transport, Royal Pioneer Corps and Army Catering Corps. One of the "Old Boys" of this unit, although it was known by a different name then, was James Langley Dalton.
Cheers
Martyn:)

The Shuttleworth Collection is very rewarding. Their collection of WW1 aircraft includes some originals which are still flown on days when the weather is appropriate. I would also like to recommend "A guide to military museums" by Terence Wise, a very handy booklet to carry about with you when travelling as it lists all the local regimental museums as well as other points of interest.

I concur!

IWM Duxford is an amazing place especially when there is an airshow in play!

Louis,

You left out the Harrisburg Civil War Museum, which was one of the most incredible museums ever!!!! Also, the National WWII Museum, which I have never been to but would like to go some day...

For the cost of the CWM in Harrisburg, it has been a vaccuum on the financial resources of that City (they were a former audit client of mine- the City). I agree, it is first rate, but tucked into one of the most run down, drug infested areas of the City. Plus, I really don't think they have spent the money neccesary to properly advertise it.

The mayor was on a kick there for awhile buying stuff to create all these pet project museums in the city (he is an avid history fan himself) but got himself into some well publicized trouble (locally) with all the artifacts he was buying up- (tried to start a wild west museum- in Harrisburg- go figure :eek:).

I went to the DDay museum in NO a couple weeks ago- I have about 60 pics posted in my profile page. It was really neat and would advise going if you are a WW2 fan.

Take care
Chris
