Well as we all know, next year is going to be a huge year for D-Day. Personally when I think of D-Day I automatically think of thousands of ships and landing craft approaching the Normandy coastline, however one cannot forget the paras too! What's your view?
It's good to see some more paras being released, and no doubt we will be seeing more soon.
I know andy has turned down the idea of a DD tank but think about this. In the past few years K&c have produced many german and allied trucks/halftracks with removable canopies. So how about a DD Sherman...WITH A REMOVABLE TAN CANVAS (made from whatever light material the usual canopies are made from, plastic?) for fixing around the outside? A sherman would be an obvious choice as this could be in service with either US or British. Seperate crew could be created for the outside, sitting or standing on top of the tank while taking cover from shells being fired from the beach?
Even a D-Day halftrack or Dodge weapons carriers would be nice. Maybe an updated release of the quad? This is a vehicle which has been sorely missed form the dday range. I think some more figures pre d-day (D-Day -1) would be a great addition as these figures can be utilised for inside landing craft as they approach the beach, or on ships/at ports preparing to leave. They can also be used to create pre landing zones in England or small scenes of troops preparing to disembark. Figures without invasion gear doing actions such as moving crates and barrells around are also great for using in different scenes from pre-dday to 1945!^&grin
The old figures of rangers in invasion gear attacking a beach are amazing. I think more of these would be great but as well as rangers, how about different units, maybe some big red 1 in the same gear, 29th infantry division, Engineers Special Brigade?^&grin
I still think a limited edition piece of 2nd Ranger Legends Len Lomell and Jack Kuhn preparing to destroy one of the 155mm guns which were supposed to be at Pointe Du Hoc would be awesome. For this Kuhn kept Lomell covered with his thompson while Lomell wrpped his m41 jacket around the butt of his own thompson and smashed the sights on the guns. He then put thermite grenades in the guns' moveable parts to prevent them being used by the enemy.
Personality figures are a great part of collecting and are usually always well recieved by collectors so how about one of Lt. Colonel James Earl Rudder in his invasion gear preparing to land At Pointe Du Hoc with his 2nd Ranger men. Lt Robert Edlin would be another welcome Ranger Edition. He was 2nd Ranger Battalion's Able company 1st platoon leader on D-Day, a fine leader and a joker. He was first man out of his LCA. He was hit in the leg almost right away and after the beach was secured was evacuated to hospital. He single handedly captured one of the Brest forts which thousands of germans were guarding and if any of you want to read about this I suggest reading either; The Battalion, Dog Company, or, The Fool Lieutenant, the latter is all about Edlin.
5th Ranger Headquarters Company Captain; John Raaen is still alive to this day (I actually have his facebook and e-mail address and he is a lovely guy) landed on Omaha beach with the Rangers Chaplain; Father Lacy in his landing craft. These two figures would be a great combination for a pre or post D-Day display. A radio operator with an SCR 300 (backpack walkie-talkie) radio, with handset and aerials inside a canvas bag on his radio belt (if in invasion gear)would also be great to see beside Captain Raaen.
There are so many amazing areas of D-Day which could be visited by K&C and I know we will not be disappointed!
