"Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever, based on the bestseller written by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, will be produced by O’Reilly, Tony and Ridley Scott, and is set to air globally on the National Geographic Channel in early 2013.

The two-hour documentary event will begin production this spring, and will combine rare historical archives and CGI re-enactments to tell the story of John Wilkes Booth’s assassination of U.S. president Abraham Lincoln.

“National Geographic has a great legacy of telling some of history’s most riveting stories,” said O’Reilly, the anchor of The O’Reilly Factor and political commentator. “The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln is no exception, as it continues to be one of the most significant, life-changing events in America’s young history.”

Tony and Ridley Scott will produce under their Scott Free Productions company.

“National Geographic Channel is the perfect partner for us to bring Bill O’Reilly’s dynamic Killing Lincoln to the screen,” said Scott. “We are excited to share with audiences this epic and thrilling story surrounding Lincoln’s assassination, one of the most notorious crimes in American history.”

“There is so much to this story that Bill O’Reilly captures in his book that I know will captivate our audience,” added National Geographic Channel president Howard T. Owens. “Using contemporary storytelling methods that are the hallmark of what the Scott brothers are known for will transform this popular best-seller into a global television event for our network.”

This is a head scratcher. It's not like this is the first time the story has been told. If they wanted to use a book, why not Edward Steers' book, the acknowledged dean of assassination historians. Also, didn't Ridley Scott do the Gettsyburg program for the History Channel last year? Not exactly a scintillating production.

I suppose it's better to have than not, but still.

I wonder how many "Peabody Awards" O'Reilly will get for this? :D:D:D:D

I should have picked one of these up when I had the chance. There is Lee Harvey's in Dallas where you can get a burger:

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Bobblehead dolls of the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln have been pulled from sale in Gettysburg National Military Park's visitors' center.

Dolls of John Wilkes Booth with a handgun were taken off bookstore shelves Saturday, a day after a reporter from Hanover's The Evening Sun newspaper asked about them.

Gettysburg Foundation spokeswoman Dru Anne Neil said Tuesday the dolls were available only for about a week before the park superintendent, the foundation president and the bookstore manager decided they shouldn't be for sale.

Confederate sympathizer Booth killed Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington in April 1865, as the Civil War was ending.

The Kansas City, Mo.-based manufacturer says the Booth dolls are a top seller and more are being produced. The doll has a big head attached to the body by a spring so it bobbles.

Kind of like naming the press room in the Treasury bldg the Aaron Burr Room a few yrs ago. No accounting for bad taste. The name was changed shortly.

This story was making the rounds on some of the blogs I read. Most who commented just chalked up to the bad taste to which Americans will sink.
