And Mikes, Matt! And I mean a ton. Someone yells "Mike " on this forum, and everyone runs for the exits It is nice though to be backed up by a bunch of Matts.

I know what you mean as we have several Mikes in my family. Actually we have a number of multiple names in my family as it has been tradition to name our children after Saints, my two kids being Stephen and David. There are plenty of Saints of course, but most have rather weird names so you are stuck with a relatively small number of "suitable" Saintly names.

Yikes, I've been thread-jacking again, surely we must have some Black collectors on Treefrog. African-Americans are VERY thin on the ground where I live so I look forward to talking to some on this forum to see what they collect etc.

I believe WIC means White Irish Catholic and many Irish names start with Mc so they are called Micks.

My last name is McGrath. I actually think "Drunken Paddy" is more endearing then "Mick"

I agree that "Mick" can sound a bit offensive and it's not a term I use. I guess any word can become offensive in time especially in these PC days. For example I have to admit to using the "P word" on occasion in reference to guys from England, but it seems that has been closed. The next thing I know I won't be able to say "Yank", "Cannuck" or even "Kiwi".

BUT the weirdest to me are those people that get offended by a shortening of the country they are from, for example Japan and Pakistan etc. To me that's as silly as a guy from Britain being offended by being called a "Brit" or an Australian being called an "Aussie". I just don't get the issue. My eldest brother reckons some people just feel ashamed of their country and don't like being linked with its name. He could be right as he's way smarter than me, yes I know that wouldn't be difficult

Btw, I noted that one "Mick" theory was that it rhymes with "Hick", as in the noise you are supposed to make when you're drunk. An interesting theory, but a bit of a stretch imo.

Going back to the original question - many years ago in my wargaming days, the club I belonged to had an open day and one of the visiting clubs put on a 25mm Zulu War game. The British were commanded by a Black guy and the Zulu's by a White chap! Can't remember who one?

I think it is a caucasian dominated hobby but there are quite a few out there - like with anything else.
