Definitely on my list.

Black Mass is an upcoming 2015 American crime film directed by Scott Cooper and written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth, based on the 2001 novel Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. The film stars Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard, Rory Cochrane, Adam Scott, Dakota Johnson, and Corey Stoll.

The film depicts the true story of Whitey Bulger, a prominent leader of organized crime in South Boston. Whitey is the brother of Massachusetts State Senator William "Billy" Bulger. Following a string of violent acts, he becomes an FBI informant for 30 years in order to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. The film focuses on the period of the late 1970s and early 1980s, as Whitey was solidifying his position as leader of the Irish-American Winter Hill Gang.

Jack Nicholsons character in The Departed supposed to be based on Bulger. His brother the Senator tried unsuccessfully to get the FBI agent made the Boston Police Chief after he retired from FBI.

Australian actor Edgerton plays the FBI agent.

yes....

I would like to see this...

I have just recently become aware of who Whitey Bulger was...

I watched "The Departed" a few night ago for the 3rd or 4th time...

it's a really good watch...

love the rat on the balcony railing at the end of the show...

Loved the ending of that movie when the Wahlberg character returns out of nowhere to administer justice. Good movie. -- Al

The relationship between the FBI agent and Bulger is the classic case of what can go wrong when handling an informant.

Hoping to see this prior to departing for Chicago.

Being from the area; the Winter Hill Gang....................would not @#$% with those guys; not then, not now, not ever.

No thanks.

What are the forum's thoughts on Depp as Bulger? I hope this is one where my low expectations leave me pleasantly surprised.

I just hope they don't play Bulger up as some type of folk hero.

I am not a fan of Depp, however he played this part brilliantly.

Excellent movie.

finally caught this last night...

little bit of a let down than from what I expected...

would have preferred a little more action...

a lot of the show and dialog centered on John Connaly's FBI role...

I think "The Departed" is a much better show...

but this was good...

I just thought it would be a lot better...

This one is actually pretty factual to the true story. They left out a bit of the actual violence. Read this book, it was the first and best expose of Bulger done way before he was ever caught.

Tom...yes...when it first came out I read some articles on Bulger...Departed is loosely based at best on him...Black Mass is a much more factual representation...I was expecting much more violence...
