Just a shout out for this excellent monthly magazine. It covers all aspects of British Warfare in WW1/2 and beyond. It covers the defeats, victories, air raids, Sea Warfare, Air warfare, the experience of the general public and all points in between. It really is worth picking up a copy as its packed with interesting articles and news about relic finds, memorials and many other items regarding how WW1/2 still shape the landscape of our country.

It also has some fascinating personal stories. One such story features a raid of HE177's on a raid that was intended to hit the Tower Bridge area of London in the last and futile bombing campaign on Britain known as the 'Baby Blitz' which cost the Luftwaffe 300 aircraft.. A HE177 was attacked by a Mosquito of 410 Sqdn , its cannon fire set fire to this big aircraft and it crashed into a field near Little Walden in Essex. One of the first to bale out came down in his parachute not far from the aircraft . He was apprehended by a member of the public on the scene and escorted to the local Police station, as they made their way there the Luftwaffe crewman stopped and hid something in a bush. On his return the witness went back to the bush and found what had been hidden, it was a large tobacco tin. He took it home and put it on his mantlepiece but amazingly did not open it! The next day the authorities arrived at his door and asked him if he'd found anything, he said he hadn't and they left. Over the next few days they returned several times asking the same question and getting the same reply. Finally on their last visit they said you've got something we want haven't you? He said yes and handed the tin over. He never heard another word and never found out what was in the tin.........seriously, wouldn't you have opened that tin?!!!{eek3} (I would have!)

Also for K&C collectors who collect these, the magazine features those large adverts.

Well worth a read

It really is Mitch. Interesting article on Dads Army's Arthur Ridley (Private Godfrey) and the serious injuries he suffered during WW1 in hand to hand fighting in the trenches.(stabbed in the groin with bayonet, smashed in the head with rifle butt and had bayonet stuck through his hand and unable to use three fingers for rest of life) Ironic that in Dads Army he played a character that had been (during WW1) a conscientious objector and yet he was heavily involved in fighting in both Wars and injured several times. He was one of the last evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk and suffered shell shock when his ship was bombed as it moved away from the beaches, it was through this injury it was discovered he had lied and played down the extent of his injuries to get back into the Army in WW2 and was therefore discharged from service. What a brave and dedicated man he was, deepest respect to him.

It is a great episode when the group find out that Godfrey had won the MM during WW1. It was a really sensitive exploration of courage and dignity. Yet for all the humour, the show could not have been a success had it not been underpinned by a belief that had invasion come Mainwaring and his platoon would have gone down fighting.

And that marvellous theme song!

Expertly summed up Jack . The humour and the affection this programme is held in does somewhat hide the fact that Britain for a few months was facing its darkest hour, and although these Home guard may not have lasted long against crack German troops the fact they were prepared to give their lives defending their country speaks volumes about them. And yes, cracking theme tune^&cool
