Britain's Zulu War (1 Viewer)

Lovely photo Joe.
That is the old WB Gatling gun crew.
I am looking forward to WB getting round to the artillery sets hopefully next year.
The good news is that AZW seems to be popular all round so the range will be developed.

Agree Paulo and can be played with a Trophy Cannon as well until a Britain one comes along......The Lt.

Now that is a photo, My Lord...Must have been the beautiful sunlight this morning to make this one pop. They also look great together (old AND new)

All the releases thus far in the WB 2008-9 Glossy AZW series:

See the picture of Randy's collection in #113.

Randy, I think this photo (nearly) says more about you than the gloss Zulu collection by Britains: Very clean and pristine. Not a crease in their pants or fingerprint on the glass door/mirror back. :D

I really like it.

Gloss Britains and you is a pretty unbeatable combination ....

Looks as though the glossy AZW is getting the chop :( according to Treefrog website all but 3 figures are listed as retired.

Featuring the new Brits glossy with their tan Foreign Service Helmets and Little Legion....The Lt.

Lt,

This is a great picture with the glossy figures of W. Britain and Little Legion together.

Thanks, Raymond.

i really hope not after forking out all that money for the hospital!!! As at the moment ive only got a hand full of poses to man the defence & was expecting a lot more poses to display around it   :(

I love this series but I fear it will go the way of the Indian Mutiny and Crimean War VC series and never be completed. I think the Lt. may be right that if they had white helmets they would have sold more and would have worked with Little Legion figures. My real frustration is that the original WB announcement for the glossies said that artillery and mounted figures would be forthcoming in the series. I had so hoped for a Naval Brigade set. I think there just are not enough of us glossy enthusiasts in today's market. The huge success of the matte WB AZW has blown the glossies away.:(

Sorry to disappoint but the WB site is also the same.

I think probably what they will do is release the glossies under one of 4 categories.

A redcoats
B bluecoats
C petticoats
D ceremonial (although this could come under redcoats)

Randy i had forgotten about the announcement in the catalogue about the artillery & mounted figures its a shame if we never see them :(

This is my frustration with the new Britains..They seem all over the place when it comes to starting multiple series. We then start buying the figures in ones and twos, spread out over many months and with a handful of figures in, the series ends, leaving us holding the bag, for trying to be faithful to the company. I know some of you are concerned that the Gloss range will be discontinued, which would be a shame, but the Matt range is the reason that I have been distracted from collecting K&C and have become a customer of Britains for the first time in over six years.

I truly believe that there are more glossy collectors than some mfg. might think. I have 150+ Hocker, Wessex, Dorset, Steadfast, (old)Britains and Clash of Arms Zulu War figures. What ties all of these company's together is that they all look similar in scale and style. The new Britains' glossys were different as to looks. Also, they were action poses. Most of the glossy collections out there are top heavy with marching poses, cavalry, arty, gatlings etc. We never got from Britains the gloss gatling, arty sets, marching sets, different unit representations, naval personal, cavalry, that would have been bigtime sellers from the get go. Instead, we got a handful of 24th shooting. Guess what, most of us already have these from other outfits. We wanted the different stuff first. Then I would love to see the sales numbers between matte vs glossy..Michael

I agree Jeff that the matte series is very popular. Let's face it what's not to like! :D I would also say that between the matte verses the glossy series, that the matte is the easy winner. That said, I would think that the Zulu glossy is still overall one of WB's better selling series. IMHO, there's just something about colonial wars and glossy finish that just go together. ;)

I hope that WB still continues the glossy range even if it's at a slower pace. Nothing ticks a collector off more tham starting to collect a series only to find after several years it is discontinued.

I agree Michael, All WB needs to do is get several artillery or mounted pieces into the Zulu glossy range to spark new life and get it going. Just imagine some 17th lancers, gatling guns, and/or rocket sets just to name a few. :D

To be fair we haven't received these items in the matte finish either.

Michael,
You would make the best neighbor a guy could have!!!!! I have the same!!!
And you hit the nail on the head with your sentiment and lamentations.

No, that true, but the matte series has over twice as many figures with more variety, the hospital, furniture, supplies and mealie bag walls. :)

To my knowledge, the glossy only has the ox wagon with supplies. :(

Remember that old saying, "All's fair in love, war and TOY SOLDIERS". :D

Well said, skeeterbuck,

I think that there is place for both gloss and matte figures irrespective of scale.

The uniforms of the armies that fought in the Napoleonic and Victorian Wars tend to to look more impressive in gloss, if one is prepared to sacrifice the realistic look for a shiny gloss display.

However, matte may be more suitable for WWI and WWII as the emphasis is not on the uniforms but realism of the figures in battle dioramas.

It is fine for manufacturers to produce both gloss and matte figures, but they should stick to either one or the other for a particular series/range.

Cheers, Raymond.:)
