Call To Arms Normans (1 Viewer)

They look like very stalwart fellows. I have a large box of knights and Viking type sitting around somewhere. These guys look to be good filler troops. The poses seem to be useful enough. All in the heat of battle and none of the pointing or standing at attention foolishness.

Wow these are not as bad as everyone seems to think they are. Detail is good, although the poses do look a little stiff. These figures would be pretty decent if the shields could be "brought out" so they don't look as flat. All in all, I like these.

The shields are separate so some conversion might make them stand out. Plus the position of the shields could make each pose more individual.

These figs would be good for a 54mm wargamer.

Hi, does anyone know what became of the Emhar 1/32 Saxons  ? I'm looking to build up a Saxon army to oppose both my Vikings from Emhar, and Conte's and ACTA's Normans. I have Conte's Saxons, but I need more thegns and fyrds (household and militia) to go with my housecarls. My collection is based in the 11th Century, so I can model Stamford Bridge, Hastings 1066 etc. Finding more of the basic unarmoured infantry is hard work. Also, does anyone know if ACTA plans to bring out Norman cavalry to go with their new Norman infantry? I really like :D the fighting poses of their infantry (pity there's only 4, but I can mix them up with my Conte's to keep them non-uniform).

Hi,

It is great to hear that there are others out there interested in 1/32nd/54mm Dark Ages figures. I have several Conte Warlord plastic figures. Along with a variety of other Dark Ages figures plastic and metal. I am also putting together Dark Ages armies. The year 1066 AD has some of the greatest battles in history. I plan on putting together a large Fulford Gate, Stamford Bridge and Hastings diorama. Along with that I want to do some other Dark Ages battles including Clontarf 1014 AD, Brunaburh 937 AD, and Ashdown 871 AD to name a few... I would enjoy very much, if you would be willing to share some photos of your Dark Age figure collection... It would be my pleasure to share photos of my collection.

I was on the fence about purchasing a set of ACTA Norman Infantry... based on other ACTA figures, I was under the impression the figures would be too small next to other 1/32nd scale figures... now I able to see a size comparison to Marx figures, from this posting, they do not look too awful...

I agree it is very difficult finding any affordable, decent plastic Norman cavalry... especially unarmored Norman cavalry and infantry. There are a handful of Conte Norman poses unarmored to some degree, however not enough to fill ranks... same for Norman Archers and Crossbowmen... Regal Toy Soldiers has a great selection of 54mm Dark Ages figures in their 1066 range, however they are metal and very expensive... here is a link if you like to see them http://regaltoysoldiers.com/product-category/soldiers-of-the-world/1066

If the Regal poses look a little familiar to Armies in Plastic... well they are... Tony from Armies in Plastic owns the masters. I have asked him several times to bring out a AiP 1066 range... his last response he was still considering it. That was a year and a half ago... I am sure if enough folks from our hobby reached out to Tony letting him know they are interested in seeing the 1066 range offered in plastic sets, it may get him to see the demand is there, to make it a reality.

I too wish Emhar would bring out the Saxon set in 1/32nd... please feel free to contact me anytime...

Cheers,
-Rick

The Normans don't look to bad, been meaning to pick up a few. I was wondering the same thing about the Emhar Saxons too. I would like to see something new come out to fill some gaps. I was even considering trying to sculpt some figures myself. Maybe one day, I'll give it a try.

Hi

just got some of these Normans - You can easily alter 3 of the poses by twisting the heads into different directions with a pair of plier grips - go softly though! The same with the free sword arm to make it point at a different angle for variety.

The pose with the sword close to his head cannot be altered, but you can have the shield attached in different directions.

Next job is to trim the small amount of flash and undercoat ready for painting. The uniform is similar on every soldier, but the shields were all different with illustrations on the front/rear of the box they came in for ideas.

Not a bad set at all costing just a few quid/dollars.

Surprising what materialises from ACTA quite unexpectedly, but we need the opposition ie Saxons to fight the Normans and also some foes to face the earlier set of Romans.

I saw these Norman troops on Ebay. From Russia. Very expensive but look amazing. Seller also has a fair number of really very good metal singles , including Norman, Viking and Saxon foot.
I have 150 Conte, Emhar plastics, Some Barzo Archers{ I bought a dozen loose at OTSN YEARS ago} as well as the Conte metals and the Warlord sets. Always looking for something new. I agree, Mounted Normans is the weak link, as well as More Saxon's.Have not really done anything with this group in years. I really enjoy painting the Dark ages warriors. No to need be alike. Beats painting rows of Napoleonics!viking 4.jpgfuzzy serpant.jpg

Maybe the Regal figs could be sold as kits. I do like them, but painted sets don't match my style.

Hi Rick, thanks for your reply - sorry I was so late in replying (I haven't had much hobby time in the last two months {sm0} ). I'm so glad to hear of your interest in the late Dark Age period, particularly the campaigns of 1066. I will be painting up my figures nearer the end of this year (I'm am currently painting to finish my HaT 1/32 Bavarian Napoleonics) and I will be happy to post photos when I've got some completed. I look forward to seeing anything you have completed in a future posting - it would be a real privledge. :salute::

Thanks for the referral to the Regal Enterprises website. They have been advertising locally here in New Zealand their all metal 1066 range of Norman cavalry, foot and archers. I'm pretty much a plastics collector, so I'll take your advice and email Tony at AIP, in support of a plastic re-release in their AIP range.

I will definitely keep you posted, and look forward to staying in contact.

Cheers,
Steve

These have now been de-listed from their catalogue after what seems like an eternity, although the 1/35th WWI Doughboys have finally put in an appearance.
With the death of Phillip Brooke of Pocketbond/Emhar, I can't see them moving forward with the Saxons.
