Instead of using paint, which would kill the value, you could buy tan colored flocking from Woodland Scenics (or the tan colored gravel as well), and sprinkle it over the piece. this would make it look authentic, and would not harm it at all.

it started with zero response and now there is such a wealth of information... Very much appreciate the help. I think it is starting to look like making your own cave with the right color and probably leaving SP011 as is, sprinkling sand over instead. I do not have SP07 and it is quite difficult to keep paying insane prices for the older SP. Lol
