Can Anyone hepl me understand these prices? (1 Viewer)

That's Chris the model maker; he's in extremely high demand in the wargaming world. There are two types of wargamers; the kind who use cloth and felt roads, clumps of lichen for forests, spray paint their vehicles one color and so on and so forth, then there are others who put on museum quality games with superbly painted figures, vehicles and stunning, scratch built terrain.

As they say, to each his own, but Chris has been in the game for a long time and his stuff is jaw dropping, he's made me several one of kind buildings, I paid out my backside for them, but I don't care as they are stunning. One of my customers has most of the Gettysburg buildings in 28mm scratch built by Chris and also a number of the Harpers Ferry buildings.

Chris is like David Marshall from TM Terrain; extremely talented and there are only so many hours in the day, so he needs to get paid for his time like anyone else.

Thanks for posting those links......................

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike,
Think of it this way; you and several other members here have a great talent, the ability to make scratch built one off custom terrain items.

Imagine if you started a company and you made superb items like Chris and David do and started selling them on Ebay, or went to the major toy soldier and wargaming shows and had a booth and sold your items.

In a short amount of time, you'd have a nice following and before you knew it, you'd be so busy you couldn't keep up with your orders, it's like any other business, you start off with baby steps, then down the road, you are world famous.

Ken Osen used to come to Chicago and bring scratch built terrain; he started out one show selling items, did very good, then show after show, his sales spiked and spiked and spiked, his room was mobbed, people lined up to buy stuff, he'd blow through his items in record time, it took some time, but he did it, he's an extremely talented person as you know.

There is a guy who comes to the wargaming shows I do and he makes ACW and AWI terrain; fences, walls, fields, farm complexes, all one of a kind; he has a mob and I mean a MOB in his booth all convention long, when the show is over, his tables are virtually empty and he goes home with pockets full of money.

He's really the only terrain guy at those shows, he's got the whole market to himself.

You know as well as anyone; find a niche, work it and rework it and you'll be the man before you know it.......................:wink2:

Thanks George,
knew I was missing something, I did see he uses all wood, no foam but it doesn't relly explain the revenous following these auctions demonstrate. would have thought the gaming industry would have a lot of cottage makers filling the niche? Would you mind posting some pics from the examples you have from him to further the discussion?
I have also seen and admired this builders stuff though its all on the fantasy side:

His stuff looks fantastic and there's no shortage of bidders. Maybe he should try his hand in the 1/30 or 1/32 world. Then, again, maybe not {eek3}

Amen, George!

To me, this question is the same as discussing the salaries of professional athletes. I don't have a problem with what the seller demands for his product, and I don't begrudge the buyer doing what he wants with his money. For me, I wouldn't necessarily spend the money, but, that's how a free market works. Everyone makes his own decision.

As far as Chris and his buildings go, guys, think of him like John Jenkins. You guys buy his figures, because they're excellent and because you like them. People outside the hobby, though, such as your wives and other family members, probably ask themselves the same question and make the same observations you're making now, about your choice.

And I just dropped a Grant each on two old Phoenix kits on eBay.

Suum quique, as the Prussians used to say.

Prost!
Brad

PS--they were the chess players, and the sedan chair with lady and 2 bearers. Just had to have 'em!
