I sold some pieces to a guy in Canada
paid the whole shipping
when the guy received package had to pay $97.62 in duty
Anybody had it happened before and why duty fees???
Anybody??
 
What did you have as the value? Depends on how it was shipped, did you use Fedex or UPS? or the regular postal service.

I have paid duty and or taxes on items in the past.
 
Hello all, as a "fellow"that does a lot of cross border shipping, I will tell you that when the package enters Canada,
UPS will almost always tag for duty this so they can get their brokerage fee.(usually around 60bucks!!
Fedex is a close second.
USPS is the best.
I have rec'd two shipments this week-one from blackdog.cz(airmail from e europe)- if you want anything let me know and the other from Hudson and Allen.
I had 12 dollars to pay on the latter....

It is a crapshoot-but the courieres will almost always go for your wallet.

I maintain a mailbox in the US for this reason.

solution-they should call you first when the shipment s n the customs house-hopefully this is close to you. go there and clear it through yourself- it is really kind of easy.then you just pay the tax and not the brokerage.

of course the other option is to support local dealers!

please forgive my grammar- the keyboard on my laptop is somewhat unresponsive as of late. I must type very slowly and deliberatly to get it right-and who has time for that?

Did you ship UPS???

I bought one figure.... $25 US when UPS dropped the item off $30 brokerage fee..... So I can see it, customs bases the duty on the value of the item you send.... UPS charges a set brokerage fee and then the duty...

Thats why they were charged on the value and not what they paid for it. Did you mark as a gift?

Sometimes it's just luck and the customs guy is having a good/bad day.
 
Two recent purchases from Canada this year found the postage 3 times what I thought it would cost and as a result I will not be getting anything more from that country. Cheers, Robin.

I don't blame you our postal service is atrocious !!
 
When buying anything from the US, I make sure it is not being shipped by courier. UPS, FedEx, etc charge a brokerage fee (minimum $30) whether it needs to go through a customs broker or not - and it usually doesn't. It's just legal theft. Then they collect the 13% sales tax for the government.

USPS and Canada Post have delivery agreements. They do not charge an unnecessary customs brokerage fee. Items shipped to Canada get reviewed by Canada Customs who will charge the 13% sales tax, but often don't charge low value items under $100. If Customs imposes the Sales Tax, Canada Post collects it on delivery for a $5 fee.

I ship quite a few items to the US and worldwide. Postage costs in Canada are about double what it costs in the US. There are 2 reasons for that. Canada Post must cover their operating costs. The USPS does not - they made a loss of $8 Billion in 2009. So in the US, the general taxpayer is subsidizing the postal rates.

The other reason is the rising value of the $C vs the falling $US. The $C went from 0.75$US to $1.00 US, a 33% increase in just a few years and as postage costs are quoted in $US, that shift in value is also reflectedd in the postal rates.

For me to sell items competitively in the US, I do like many Canadians - I quote a low Postage rate to the US and eat the difference

i just sent from Canada, a pegaso bust in a small box- $8 to the UK
and an Andrea box opf dogs-in an envelope! to Alberta Canada-$12.both were ebay free postage(built in) but i didn't expect the Alberta charge! wow talk about a loss-thanks ebay,paypal and Canada post! everyone made money but me!-to my own countryman!

I do like Phantom :

- always import using USPS
-or go to the border and pick the items directly in the US

By the way, there are no duty fee per se for toy soldiers or kits.. You will only have to pay the taxes. Same thing for tools and most of the things actually..

Slightly off topic. However as many of the posters are based in Canada on this thread. Can I take an opportunity to ask a question.

What's the cheapest method of shipping a large item from Canada to the UK?

The box is too large for Canada post. As it contains a boat. Is DHL or one of the other main global courier companies viable?

Thanks in advance for any input.
 
Courier will ship- go in and check with them....I wish i had the answer for you but there are so many variables.....I don't think DHL does foreign shipping from Canada anymore though.
