Canadians Polite - Ausies Vocal (1 Viewer)

The Aussies have made a stink over their treatment "like colonials" by the Imperial War Museum regarding their contribution to WWI. Canada hasn't complained, but we are in the same "treated as colonials" boat. So as a Canadian, I would like to give a middle finger up to the Imperial War Museum and a thumbs up to the Aussies for complaining. I was at the Imperial War Museum in 1975 and was shocked that the IWM had a display of Vimy Ridge that didn't even mention the Canadians who were the troops in that battle. I complained to some IWM officials on the spot. Seems they still haven't learned to treat their most loyal allies better.

Here's the story.

Well they don't mention Jan Smuts or Dan Pienaar much either
Oh well we colonials will just have to beat them at cricket and rugby
That will teach them a lesson.

Well the Poms who don't know any better forget or don't want to remember that the sharp edge of the B.E.F were the A.I.F, the New Zealand division, the Canadian Corps, The Jocks, Welsh, Springbroks and all those colonials who still lie in the fields of France and Belgium. It is only a handful of know nothings that have this idea and all more informed Poms know better.
Anyway Aussies more vocal?........what gives you that idea? ^&grin

Possibly, but the responsibility to commemorate a nation's history must surely fall on the respective governments. I do not rely on the Brits to tell Australian history any more than I rely on Hollywood to make movies as though they were delivered under oath. As an interesting aside, the censorship rules governing the British correspondents generally forbade the mentioning of unit names. The correspondents had the view that the Australians and Canadians developed inflated views about their contribution as a result. I am not sure about Canada, but exaggeration is almost unknown in Australia{sm4}.

I will go with Charles Bean on the matter -

What these men did nothing can alter now. The good and the bad, the greatness and the smallness of their story will stand. Whatever of glory it contains nothing now can lessen. It rises, as it will always rise, above the mists of the ages, a monument to great-hearted men; and, for their nation, a possession for ever. "

CHARLES BEAN, on the First AIF: The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-1918

Oh well 2015 will be a chance for all the colonials to go and give the old mother country a kicking
Two world cups up for grabs
Cricket and rugby world cups
Let the common wealth fight it out.
Tally Ho.

Maybe you need to donate more.

The American Chapel in St. Paul's is really nice. Funded [in part] by a fund drive in the U.S. And on going to
this day. Then again a memorial is a bit different than a museum.

I have no idea how much credit American Museums give to the Allies. Maybe just forgiving, to some degree anyway,
1812 is a token. Probably we just do blockbuster war films, hire Commonwealth actors and teach them how to speak
English.

Me, personally, would focus funding more in your own country. You've got some nice remembrances.
Expand and improve. That way you can drive the story.

I thought all those young men made that donation all those years ago.

I'd probably use the words "sacrificed their lives" all those years ago. None-the-less, it takes money to honor the
remembrance in a museum or memorial.

Oh for Gods sake never read such rubbish. The IWM cannot possibly mention ever general or senior officer from every nation in the conflict. Not only that but if one actually VISITS the new galleries they will see that the emphasis is no longer on generals but more the experience of the soldier and the civilian on the home front. Also again if you visit or actually read up on it you will see all over the walls the losses in numbers and percentages of all the nations involved, it's about the human experience not the ins and outs of military leaders.THE WHOLE IDEA was to move away from the military centric and more towards the human aspect and how it affected people around the world.

'two fingers to the IWM' Give me strength:rolleyes2:

That is a pathetic post Wayne and does you no credit at all, in fact it merely entrenches views about stereotypes from your country.. What's more it is an insult to the people who have worked hard at the Museum to ensure that all the allied nations losses are remembered there, a museum to which you have not even visited so do not really have a clue about, classy.
