It's been a while - but finally found some time to pick up a brush again. Below see some pics of my latest project - which shows three 30mm scale Flat figures of War Elephants of the Punic Wars - c.200BC.

As you may be able to make out -these three figures are at different stages of development - as the paint washes and layers are built up. I prefer to paint mine in high gloss - using Humbrol enemals, as usual. If you look at the first, (completed) and third figures - you may be able to see the difference in development best. The middle figure shows how they develop from finished to an earlier stage.

These figures came from Germany as castings - from a Gent who now owns the moulds. I think that they were originally engraved by Ludwig Frank, and have been through several owners hands, over the years - but the current new owner is Wilfried Dangelmaier ( zinnfiguren.dangelmaier.com). He speaks and writes English very well - and accepts Paypal - so dealing with him is very easy. He has several catalogues available of many subjects - but I appear to have lost my copy from which these came. Ray (nmrocks) may be able to help us out with more details about these.

I'm very much enjoying painting these - so hope you like how they are coming along. jb

Lovely jb.....you can't beat a parade of Elephants.....large or small :wink2: :salute::

Well M, at this size, the Commandant will allow them in the house,^&grin but full size would be a definite no-no.{eek3} jb{sm4}

I've just been checking back on where I originally got them - and I've remembered that they used to be sold as castings from "Go International" - who had an extensive catalogue covering many areas. Many of these were purchased by Herr Dangelmaier several years ago - and as stated - they are still available from him by e-mail.

Some of the catalogues have been reproduced by other enthusiasts elewhere. I don't think they would mind me posting a link to some of them:

Well M, these are my last three Jumbo's, for now - but I also have a Persian Chariot underway (from the same source). When I complete these - I also have a couple of French Napoleonic Horse Artillery pieces (Flats again). These will hopefully last me until I get back to the UK before Xmas. I'll post them here as they get underway, from time to time.

As I don't know of any unpainted casting TS makers in NZ - I will probably bring out some more Flat castings to paint for my next visit, next year. They will be relatively easy for me to resource from the UK - and they take up little room and weigh a fraction of fully round figures in my case. jb

Can't argue with this statement, VERY nicely done jb ..... but we've come to expect that from you. :wink2:^&grin

B. :salute::

Very well done JB! You've been kinda quiet lately, now I see why!! You've become quite the artist in this genre of the toy soldier and of course I appreciate your skill in my favorite hobby subject.
Bravo!!

Well, as you know Ray - moving house from one side of the World to another, takes a while. Packing up and disposing of stuff - then re-starting all over again was the only sensible option - and with so much to do - painting went onto the back burner for quite a while.

The good news is, however - I now find that I have the odd moment or two (between planting up a brand new garden), to splash a bit of paint about once again! I've also decided that it makes most sense for me to continue sourcing my "Flats", whilst I'm in the UK - and bring them with me to paint whilst I'm down-under - and continue with my "Fully round" painting, when I'm back in the UK.

Glad you like these - which were obtained from Wilfried D, as a direct result of the info you gave me (hurrah for another Paypal-friendly German seller!) - so thanks for that.:D:salute:: Hope to finish them off later this week, when I'll post them again. jb

Very nice JB fantastic job :salute:::salute:::salute::

Thanks John - just finished off my second Jumbo and my Chariot that I mentioned earlier - so will post another pic when they are dry enough to handle. Pleased you like 'em. jb

Here's another pic - showing my second War Elephant now completed. Note also, my Persian War Chariot - now also completed. I bought this as a casting from the same source, when I bought the 3 elephants. I did a bit of reading, last night about these chariots, and there was apparently a famous charge of 200 of these vehicles, fitted with scythe-like blades to each wheel, ordered by Darius against the forces of Alexander at the Battle of Guagamela in 331BC (close to the modern city of Mosul in Iraq).

Apparently, fearsome as they look, they weren't successful - as the opposing ranks simply opened up to let them charge through - and they were then pursued and destroyed by Alexander's Cavalry.

I enjoyed painting it, nevertheless, and gave it four dapple-grey horses. I found some pics online - which helped me decide on the colour scheme for the horse and rider armour.

My battery just died on my camera - so I'll try for some better pics of both sides later. What you see here, is an outside pic, making use of some glorious NZ Spring weather in The Bay of Plenty! - Lovely!!!:D:D jb

Battery charged - here's a few more pics of the three pieces completed, so far.

Note in the pics of the chariot - the fine hair from the paintbrush used to apply my varnish coat, which has become detached from the brush, and become stuck across the horse ears!!{eek3}

This shows the value of taking pics and putting them up on the computer screen - which enlarges the image enormously. Almost impossible to see with the naked eye - it showed up here perfectly. It has now been removed - so rather than re-photo the piece, I thought it might be useful to show how this photo technique can be used as an aid to the painter, as it can show up blemishes, omissions, smudges etc., too. :rolleyes:jb

OK, it is a Friday night and i do have the house to myself cause my wife is workin swing, but regardless of my process of attitude adjustemnt this evening, I must tell you in an venacular that is relivant to the age we live, DUDE... YOU ARE KILLING IT!!! the detail is getting finer and finer and your own particular glossy style is beautiful.
Really well done and I am loving it!
Keep it comin Bro!

Ray baby, as you're the one that really convinced me to get started with these - I'd be delighted. :smile2: There's just one snag, at the moment - The Rugby World Cup has just begun - and I'm already developing square eyes from too much TV!!!! BUT- as soon as I get an hour or two free from watching some great Rugby{sm3} - I'll finish off my last Jumbo ( which is almost there), and then I'll post them.:cool: I had a glass or two of something nice last night - whilst watching more Rugby into the wee hours - and slept like the proverbial log when I eventually got to bed!!{sm2}

Feel free to use them anywhere else too, by the way. I'm an associate member of IFFS - but don't know how to post 'em there - so feel free, if you like.

All the best - jb

Ray.........Work is (was) a four-letter word!{sm2} jb

My completed Flats project, of a War Elephant Platoon of three - if that's the correct term - is shown below. I've also added in the Persian War Chariot of King Darius III (c.331BC) below - with the Elephants in the background. I fancy that these were the "tanks" and maybe "armoured cars" of the Ancient World. Maybe not as effective as weapons of War - as their psychological impact would have been on the large ranks of troops they opposed.

I've painted them in my usual Glossy style ( which I'm told is unusual, nowadays - as matte now appears to be the norm), though that has always been my preferrence - and hope you may enjoy looking at them - as much as I did painting them. jb
