Anybody got any good wins (or losses) in the Christmas present season.

One of my gifts was a Star Wars coffee mug. That might sound like a win, if you are a Star Wars fan, but the one my daughter chose for me was Darth Vader {sm2}. More of a Yoda coffee mug type of guy.

As is usually the case I choose a few clothing items for myself and they go under the tree anyway. One was a brown flowery type shirt and had been thinking to buy same one for my son but did not as he might think it a bit immature for father and son to have the same shirts. His "style" is usually white, grey, navy blue and black. Nothing flowery in his wardrobe and thought he would never wear it anyway. So it came as a big surprise when he picked the same shirt to give to his sisters boyfriend and that got a laugh as we were opening them at same time. The odds of that were incredible as he seems to be allergic to shopping and had left it to the last few hours of trading.

As usual the "win""was the food laid on by my better half. You know we have eaten too much when there is no point putting out the cheese platter{sm3}. Would have made it but for the three desserts she had made and I am not not normally a dessert type of guy.

PS and managed to watch Love Actually yet again. Bit of a worry as probably watched it more than Zulu by now and Zulu had a serious head start.

Yep, like you Brett, have eaten far too much over this break. Watched Love Actually for the tenth time and our traditional movie 'Christmas Vacation' Chevy Chase classic which we have watched every Christmas for the last 25 years. Had plenty of time to do setups, enough photos to put on my thread well into the New Year. So life is good. Wish all the forum members a Happy Happy New Year. Robin.

Actually we have also watched Love Actually for the nth time, along with Christmas Vacation . . . My wins include 3 very generous Treefrog Treasures gift certificates . . . Let the fun begun for 2018 . . . .

I got a few cool things for Chanukah:
-An Israeli Army map of the Temple Mount from 1967
-A pair of antique Art Deco enamel Star if David cuff links

As I posted, my father passed away a few weeks ago. A couple days ago, a gift he had ordered for me came in the mail. It was a nice stud finder, which will come in handy when I move into my new apartment on Monday.

My wonderful wife was very generous with my collectors habits this season: an antique Malacca Cane with a scrimshawed fist handle, the ships papers of the St. Julian, a whaler, including the log and an insurance policy for a voyage in 1854, and a coffee table book entitled "Ingenious Contrivances, Curiously Carved: Scrimshaw in the New Bedford Whaling Museum":

I just sold a bunch of canes (12) at auction this past summer. I wish I knew you collected them.
If interested in seeing them, I think you can see them on osona auction website, past auctions.
Before I sell again, I’ll contact you.

Thanks Zach, but I don't collect canes, my wife knows I collect scrimshaw and bought it for me because of the scrimshaw fist.:smile2:

Nothing as fancy as Louis but I received Robert Fagle’s translation of The Iliad, two novels of the Spanish Civil War, some Chicago Bears gear, a new wine opener and wine carrying case, First Legion figures and, surprisingly, three IDF figures. Quite pleased.

Louis,

That is a stunning cane! I know it is an antique, but it has a sort of "power to the people" look doesn't it? I was blessed with a new iphone 8,9, or X I don't remember, but it has the super cool new camera on it. A TUMI billfold that is just AWESOME, white T-shirts from Calvin Klein (I made easy for ma) a list of "honey do's" for 2018.

John from Texas

John,

If you look at the page of the Scrimshaw Book I posted with the canes, you will see that canes with scrimshaw fist handgrips were a popular theme in the 19th Century. You are right, though, it does have a Power to the People feel.

Happy holidays!

Louis

A dvd of 'midway" 1976,,,Possibly the worst film editing in the history of war films,,,at least 35 minutes of scenes lifted from tora tora..cage masts and ships in the background,,P40s taking off sailors fighting back etc,,80% wrong time period shots of hellcats,,1943-44,,Helldivers,,corsairs,,avengers ,even a jet crashing on a carrier deck,,and the all time piece of resistance-a photo of the Nuke powered "enterprise" in the special features "ships of midway",,
Lazy film editing im used to from AHC,,this jewel is magnificent,,but then again I saw it back in the day ,,,Their actually is film of TBDs,,wildcats,,sbds and Yorktown class carriers out there kids in the editing dept,,but lots of background of Vindicators posing as everything unfortunately unarmed,,oh my,,
