'Dutch Cota went from a hero of Omaha Beach'
I'll have to check but I think he was sacked sometime in Normandy? Then managed a new command in the 28th and regained his reputation after leading a heroic defense in the Bulge?
He was given divisional command in recognition of his Omaha Beach leadership. Highly criticized for the poor performance/high casualties of the division in Hurtgen Forest. Followed up by heavy losses in BoB. Was never relieved (sacked) of command but not looked upon favorably after that and no chance for corps command assignment. Chris
From everything I have read about the Hurtgen Forest, any Army unit that fought there was put in an almost unwinnable situation from the get-go. Then, to go from there beat up and understrength to fight for survival at the Bulge, wasn't doing Cota any favors. To look down on a man who led his men through all of that can only be done by desk jockey Generals.

It was his leadership, or lack of, at Hurtgen Forest that earned him the criticism. If you've read any history of the battle, as you claim, you would know that. I'm merely relating what has been recorded in numerous books. He was almost relieved. Chris
