Hi Guys,
Last night was flipping channels and came across a B/W war movie (on SBS here). Missed first few minutes but it was Japanese v Chinese and initial street fighting scene was very well done. Movie called City of Life and Death and about Japanese in Nanking.

Made in China in 2009 and seen from both sides. Well made movie but brutal with massacres, rapes etc. One of those movies where you know things not going to work out well for a character. Gives new meaning to "not worth the paper it is written on ".

Apparently did quite well at Chinese box office which surprises me as would be hard viewing for Chinese. Apparently the Chinese critics did not like that one of the Japanese soldiers was almost a good guy (in the sense that you could tell he was not enjoying things like the others were) and Director received threats over it.

Nanking was the capital of China in 1937. I was aware of what happened but this movie makes you undestand
why Chinese can have / do have strong feelings about the Japanese. Over 200,000 killed in the city
and had its own War Crimes Tribunal after the war.

Next time you are flipping channels or look at a TV schedule you will know what it is. Not one for the wives.

I saw this one a year ago. The machine gunning of the crowd of soldiers was striking.

Have watched this movie a couple of times. It is a hard movie to watch because of the horrible occurrences, but it is so well done that it really is a must see. It is brilliantly filmed in black and white, which considering the subject matter, is just as well. It is gritty and about as realistic as anything I've ever seen. -- Al

Very good movie, nothing better Brett when your flicking away through all the crap they put on and you find a gem.

Al and Wayne,
Definitely a hard one to watch but once you start it you feel you have to finish it. Pretty big budget production. Doubt it had a run in Japan.
