Here are some photographs of a Verlinden 120mm Coldstream Guards Colour Sergeant kit which I assembled and painted circa 1990. This figure was painted with Testors gloss paint.

Best Wishes, Raymond.:)

This is the original box. The figure may have looked more realistic in matte paint finish.

The last 2 shots are close ups......

The paint was too thick in many places eg: for the SA80/L85 bullpup and rank insignia.

The barrel is deformed due to multiple repairs for the broken bayonet.

Also, I could not get the eyes done right, so I left it.

Hey Raymond,

That's a big old beast! {sm3} Don't often see figures that large on here, I assume it's a resin model? Painting wise you have done a good job.{bravo}}

Hi Jeff,

Thanks very much for your kind words. The assembled figure stands at 120mm and is made of resin. The marble base was sourced from an old Italian souvenir.

Cheers, Raymond.:)

Hi Raymond - I like him too - get a load of that red jacket - now that's what I call a glossy!! Lovely.^&grin

I note that you too have trouble with eyes ( me too) - have a look at the "mitchtoy painting technoques " thread a couple of clicks down in Painting. I had a look the other day - and there's a very informative masterclass by Dave there - which shows how to do eyes. Might be worth a look - especially with a bigger sized model than most.

Like him though - as he is - wouldn't have known about the SA80 unless you told us - don't worry, the real things fall apart when you sneeze anyway - (allegedly!). I used a far more robust and ancient instrument - but that's what they all say!! {sm3}johnnybach

The way I paint eyes is to paint the left eye first, the easyist, and then turn the figure upside down to paint the right eye. Sounds confusing when you read it but try it with a figure and you will see what I mean. Trooper

Yes trooper - that's just how Dave Youngquist demonstrated how to do it in the video I was writing about! (albeit - he used a model a bit larger than I have ever done!!). So simple when you see it being done though - and I would have never thought about it - until I saw it being done that way!

Thinking about it now - it's easy to understand that if you are right handed, painting that second eye, your own hand, and the nose of the model, obscures where the paint goes - so it's all to easy to get paint where you don't want it.

Thanks both for the explanation - and demo! johnnybach.

Hi johnnybach,

Thanks very much for the heads up on the "How to Paint Eyes" tutorial by Dave Youngquist on the MichToyCo channel.

It is a very helpful clip on how to do a good paint job of the eyes. I think it would be easier for larger figures as in 120mm and more of a challenge for the smaller 54mm.

I assembled and painted this figure about 20 years ago when gloss paint finish was still in vogue (I think). There are not too many collectors now who still appreciate gloss figures, but I am glad you are one.

Kind Regards, Raymond.:)

Very impressive, especially at this large a scale.

I hope you will share more of your collection with us. Your photograph is excellent.

Very nice job Raymond:salute::

Cheers

Martyn:)

Hi Martyn,

Thanks very much for your kind words. I made my first Defence of Rorke's Drift diorama in the early 1990's with 1/72 scale figures by ESCI of Italy. After about 10 years on display, there was so much repainting and repair work needed that I decided to scrap the display. It was then that I moved on to the Trophy AZW range and in particular the Storehouse set.

Cheers, Raymond.:)

Hi Randy,

Thank you very much for your words of encouragement. This is a relatively large figure and the only 120mm figure that I ever painted. Most of my painting work was done on much smaller 1/72 scale figures. I don't do much painting now, except for touch-ups.

Thanks, Raymond.:)
