I've been thinking about starting a collection of soldiers from the Anglo-Zulu War. I probably already collect enough sets (K&C Alamo, K&C ACW, K&C RAF, K&C LAH, Trophy ACW, Tradition ACW) but why not start one more? I'd like to start a glossy set so I think I'm limited to the following manufactures:

1) Trophy, if the Zulu sets are as nice as the ACW I cannot go wrong. However, they are not being made any more so I'd have to purchase on eBay as they became available at a hefty price.

2) Imperial, I know very little about this company but believe they are not being made any more so I'd also have to purchase on eBay.

3) Regal, based in New Zealand, looks nice but I'm not sure how easy they are to obtain in the states.

4) Little Legion out of the UK looks real nice but I have never seen them in person and am unsure how easy they are to obtain in the states.

5) William Britain seems to have a decent line readily available through dealers and on eBay but will the glossy line only be available for Rorke's Drift or will they continue it for other battles?

6) William Hocker has a lot of retired sets and I never see Hocker on eBay so they might be tough to find.

So I was wondering if any of you guys who collect glossy soldiers from the Anglo-Zulu wars could provide additional information and your thoughts on what line you would collect if you were just starting. I know this is an extremely subjective question but it's always nice to hear what fellow collectors think.

I collect Little Legion AZW.

Little Legion AZW can be purchased from The Toy Soldier Shoppe in Milwaukee. Paul is a pleasure to deal with.

Tradition also makes a Zulu War line. And I don't think Bill Hocker retires anything; give him a call and see what he has available.

Oh, and I collect Trophy, but I started my collection years ago. You can get Imperial Zulu War relatively cheaply on eBay, and they're always up for auction.

In regards to the WB glossy line, they no longer technically make them anymore. They are however adding individual figures to the Redcoats line, there have been a few 24th foot figures, a band, colour party and there will be an officer of the 17th Lancers due nest month and a trooper due next year.

Trophy did a fantastic range for the AZW but are sadly no longer trading:(. I would suggest Little Legion as an excellent alternative, their glossy AZW range is compatible with Trophy and new sets are being added every few months.

Cheers

Martyn:)

Thanks to everyone who has replied. Couple of additional questions and comments:

1) Does the Toy Soldier Shoppe in Milwaukee carry all the figures listed on the Little Legion site? Has anyone in the US ordered directly from Little Legion? I thought I read somewhere it takes months to receive an order directly from Little Legion. Is this true?

2) I didn't realize Bill Hocker does not retire sets. I guess if they do not have a price in the available section you must special order. Do you know of any albums on Treefrog showing Hocker's AZW line in detail?

3) I guess I'll rule out WB if they are not making the glossy AZW line anymore. I'd like to collect a line with longevity.

4) Little Legion is sounding better and better. If they are compatible with Trophy I can pick up those sets and mix them in with the Little Legion sets.

Does anyone know if Bill Hocker and Little Legion will have representation at the Chicago show next month? Thanks again for taking the time to help.

Currently an by far Little Legion carries the most extensive Line of Glossy Zulu War Figures. You'll have no trouble what so ever in acquiring the the various units that took part in the fighting at Isandlwana as well as those who took part in the defense of the Mission Station including character figures . You also have available to you the mounted units along with a large selection of accessories. No other glossy manufacter today offers the selection that available to you from LL. The Toy Soldier Shopee maintains a limited inventory on hand an will have to orders sets you may want with the same lead time if you order them direct from Mike Norris at LL if the set is not in stock at the Toy Shoppe. If your hearts set on collecting Glossy figures of the Zulu War Little Legion is the way to go. Your best bet is to order a catalog from Mike Norris at Little Legion as well as viewing what he's offering on his web site. Mike will also custom your orders. It's the way I would go today if my goal was starting a collection of Glossy Zulu War Figures. Welcome to The Land of The Zulus rcapp shouldh you decide to join in........The Lt. aka Papa Zulu

Little Legion also does not retire sets as far as I know. You can order sets painted with other regiments from LL. The Toy Soldier Shoppe will be at the OTSN.

Good Luck on picking up Trophy sets, they are hard to find and expensive to buy as the latest sets on EBAY demonstrated.

I do not know if anyone found Trophy AZW at the OTSN last year. I did not see any at the show and I do not think anyone claimed that they found any AZW at the OTSN.

Just if you're interested I'm selling a few Regal Zulu Wars sets on e-bay at the moment, these are the older Regal sets not the newer Soldiers of the World sets.

I think Bill Hocker attends Chicago and I know Paul does. They will be able to answer all your questions I'm sure.

Little Legion is the closest thing to Trophy available today.
