I have 52 linear feet of glass shelves in cabinets, each cabinet with four 22-1/2 inch by 13 inch shelves. I rigorously limit myself to several of the WW2 K&C lines (Afrika Korps, 8th Army, Battle of the Bulge, D-Day, Wafen SS, Fields of Battle and Fall of Berlin) with additional armour pieces from Figarti, Honour Bound and Collectors Showcase. I could easily fall victim to Napoleon or ACW if I bought even one piece - so I don't. I have also become very selective about what WW2 pieces to get.
At first I lined up the armour pieces 2 or 3 deep across one or more shelves like armoured columns moving across the desert or through the Ardennes. Then I began to add selected soldier figures to make things more interesting. Then a few buildings and some trees. Then some ruined buildings. Then homemade photos of backgrounds. Then some bases - cobblestone street, snow covered ground, desert bases. You can see where this is heading.
My cabinets are overfull, but I am just beginning to make mini-dioramas 22" x 13" or multiples thereof. They are more interesting than bare columns of armour. It also allows me to play with them and rotate them in and out of the boxes. When a new piece comes out, I can use it as the focal point of a new diorama with a new mix of older pieces. I can once again appreciate the older pieces as I make the new diorama. My static collection has become a living one. I am always looking for new bases like the grass bases which have just become available or better photos to make backgrounds out of. I no longer get that sick feeling of worrying about where I am going to put the new arrivals.
