It took me a year and a half and with 6 to go, I will have viewed all 152 episodes.
I have come to the conclusion that Sgt. Saunders and his crew should actually be put on trial for war crimes being the fact all the German soldiers they killed!
One thing for sure, relative to what Saunders and his boys did in WW2, Audy Murphy would only be eligible for a boy scout merit badge!
I would also like to thank the beer brewing industry, for without a beer in hand I could not have accomplished this feat!

One thing for sure, had Saunder's squad been typical of the Allied forces, no more than a regiment would have been needed to take Mosc..er, Berlin. -- lancer "Disclaimer" - the preceeding statement is not intended to hurt anyones feelings or insult the Allies fighting abilities, only to highlight the abilities of Saunders, Kirby, Caje, Littlejohn, Doc, Hanley and their multitude of Hollywood gueststars.

That is quite an achievement Gary. What would you say was the average German body count per episode?:D

In answer to the body count question, I once, back in the 70's, attempted such a count. I made it through 86 episodes before going bonkers. The count after those 86 episodes was 1142 German KIA and 228 Allied KIA. Saunders and his men accounted for 756 Germans with the rest falling to guest stars, artillery, mines, etc. 2nd Platoon of Co.K did some major damage although the squad did suffer some 123 seperate wounds in the counted episodes (amongst the 7 members)! Just could not do the rest of the episodes. -- lancer

Wow, that is a bit mind boggling. That implies a series body count of 2018 and 31 purple hearts per member.:D That was some tough squad.

LOL, good one Gary. I think I've only worked my way through maybe half of them.

According to the count in Jo Davidsmeyer's Combat Viewers Companion, Sgt. Saunders, alone, was wounded by bullets 18 times. He was injured 8 times by beatings, 2 burns, 12 other injuries by various means and he passed out on 21 occasions. That is what I call dedication. -- lancer

I always enjoyed Combat, and Vic Morrow. Certain no nonsense actors like

he, and Lee Marvin, James Coburn, and Steve McQueen are always fun to

watch.:D

Excellent book for reference on the series. A lot of up and coming stars guest starred on the series.

It was, and shall always be, my favorite show. -- lancer
It was a great series. I have watched most of them by this time I think, many when they first aired and the rest on re-runs and dvd. I still enjoy returning to them from time to time.

Agree with Bill-A great-great show considering that is was first aired when? December '62. There had been nothing as gritty as this on TV before and who was counting the German casualties anyway? In those glorious pre-PC days the Nazis in the movies were still very much the bad guys as they were in my favorite comic books "The Sarge" and "Sergeant Rock"-good time to be an adolescent.

Last year I bought a couple of Combat DVD's (not the full set) that included the two-parter "Hills are for Heroes" directed by Morrow, it still impressed the hell out of me after 40 years and I watched it twice back to back-and it had an anti-war theme.

The show lasted for five series when it was abruptly dropped and replaced by the dreadful Garrison's Gorillas which lasted just one season-enough said. just "Take the point"

You know i always wondered why the germans left perfectly good cover to just get shot. I also bought some cds and it is amazing how much they used the same town set. I did not notice that when i was little.

The village was a backlot set that was used in several different series at one time or another. Over the course of "Combat" (5 seasons) the village was destoyed and rebuilt constantly eventually becoming a wreck. The demise of the village can be seen as the series advances. I think the village sight is now condos. -- lancer

This thread inspired me to start watching them again. I was just treated to Director Altman and guest appearances by Keenan Wynn, Tom Skerritt, Adam Williams, Tab Hunter and Walter Koenig. It is like seeing an old friend again.

My daughter gave me the entire dvd series 2-3 years ago. Best gift ever. The guest stars on Combat are a veritable who's who of Hollywood stars at that time. Bronson, Marvin, Savalas, to name but three. Hans Gudegast (Rat Patrol German CO) aka Eric Braedon of soap opera fame is in several episodes. Even icon Robert Duvall made at least 3 seperate appearances. What a great time machine. -- lancer
