The comic with the German ace was "Enemy Ace", (as mentioned by Fullyautomatic in his post), by DC Comics. The ace's name was Hans von Hammer, obviously based on von Richthofen down to the triplane and hunting on his estate. I still have these comics and bunchs more, like a lot of you. There was also a comic about a WW1 American ace based on Frank Luke but the name eludes me right now. I have those, too. One of my favorites was, I think, done by Dell and called "Combat". It took actual battles and campaigns and put them in comic form. There were such titles as
Midway, D-Day, Monte Cassino, and many others. They were great. -- Al
I still don't have access to my comics (in storage), but I believe the name of the Frank Luke clone comic was "The Balloon Buster". This also happens to be Luke's nickname. Like Luke, the comic character is from Arizona and flies Spads. The art work was quite good as I remember. -- Al

DC started releasing Black and white collections a few years ago. I picked up Enemy Ace and it was much much better than I remebered it as a kid.

Hey Guys,
Great to see this thread. I have always loved war comics. I have a couple boxes of WWII era comics that focus on depictions of the Japanese and 9 boxes of Cold War comics from 1950 to 1956, mostly spy & War titles. I love all of them, especially the Atlas/Marvel titles. I do not have but a handful of DC stuff. Some of the smaller publishing houses put out the wildest stuff, Ajax/Farrell and Comic Media to name two. Check out the image below for a brutal example of an American comic from the early 1950s!
