Answering Middleguard question, I painted my first figure about 2002-2004. It was very poor, no eyes, no details, no shadows, Humbrol paints (don't use it, only acrylic!).
I think from 3-4 years I paint like now, so it took 10 years (with long breaks) to learn... I'm also sure that if you have good teacher next to you, you can learn it in a month or a few months. At least to not too high level like mine. This is just to know how-to and be patient.
How much time it takes to make one figure is more complex question. My way of painting is very time-consuming. I don't use washes and dry brush technique. Some people like Mike can get fantastic reqults with these. I paint all shadows and lights by repeatedly applying next levels of slightly brighter paint.
Never checked this but I think to make these 6 mounted figures took me 30-40 hours in total(?) Hard to say without measuring it. I paint only sometimes in a free evenings, and in reality it is like 6 weeks since I started them.
