I remember being so excited, way back when, when I went into Conte's room at OTSN and saw that he was doing the Civil War in plastic. Who'd have thought he'd be able to pull off making full three dimensional figures in plastic? And the Ken Osen sculpted Petersburg fortifications were amazing...and huge...and only 1/3 of what was envisioned for the 1864 playsets.
It turned out, for me, that the very size of the foam pieces discouraged me from playing with the stuff very often. I bet it's been at least five years since I've done anything with them. But, after having so much fun with the Marx set-up, I got motivated to make room in the basement for a Conte set up.

Very happy to see that you did get to set up and play with your Conte ACW plasics and play set and can see why you were excited to see it for the first time. Thanks for setting it up and sharing it with us............Joe

That is outstanding, really spectacular to be honest, great looking trees and groundwork too, excellent use of what looks to be faux fur, great backdrops too, simply brilliant.

Those earthworks sections are great as are the figures..................would love to see this done with painted Conte figures too................a lot of time and effort went into this, thanks for sharing..............

Very, very nicely staged and photographed Joe . . . . I see you are working miracles with your backdrop photos as always . . . . . . Thoroughly enjoyable . . . .

Dig that cannon blast!.....Picked up my first Conte ACW plastic set back in 2003.
I was amazed at the sculpting and have enjoyed painting and converting them ever since.

Thanks for the reply Joe.

This layout is incredible on a number of levels and as nice as it is, if it were done with the same amount of painted
Conte figures, it would go to another level if that is possible.

I remember Richard used to sell his ACW plastic figures painted, they sold like crazy...............as well as his metal figures............

I was rough on RC in the past, but for me the best times of all in this hobby was when Conte was coming out with his plastic playsets.
Sadly those times are long gone.
I really like and appreciate what TSSD does but it just doesn,t have that Conte excitement.

I will set up the painted guys before I'm done. First I want to bring in some other unpainted figures.

Agreed, the buzz was incredible the first year he showed up with the first of his many playsets.

My favorites were the WWII ones with all the terrain features, love that church and priory........

{bravo}}{bravo}}Glad you decided to continue with your unpainted figures Joe and it's well worth the wait viewing the additional figures you decide to share with us. There's no doubt we're in for quite a treat headed our way when your painted figures make their appearance..........Joe{bravo}}{bravo}}

EXCELLENT set up Joe, on first the Marx and then Conte!!!!! Refresh my memory on where the source of the diorama "drape" comes from? Also, I noticed the other day when I put the CTS ACW caissons together the horses when placed in the harness, first one then the second, bend out the harness bar a little more than my liking and it could stress the plastic? especially when both horses are inserted. Anyone else experience this? Also what is the trick for getting the cannon latch and limber latch and horse harness latch inserted together when in tow?

The drape is my own creation. I loved the grass mats that Build a Rama and Hudson and Allen and JG Miniatures make, but they cost at least 20 bucks a square foot. For the type of set-ups I like, there was no way I could afford their stuff. I wanted something I could use to make rolling hills, something which would be versatile, and something much cheaper than the other alternatives. I started experimenting and now have quite a selection of ground covers. I keep hoping to find a consistent sorce of the raw material, but so far that has eluded me, otherwise I'd be offering them for sale.

I actually was really pleased with how well the CTS horses went into their hitches. It was much easier than the original Marx. It just takes a careful hand.

Those CTS Guns give it that " The Good the Bad and the Ugly" feel about it!
And that wagon looks like the one from the movie...just need a few dead guys in there!
