My first post in the Conte page. But John at Gettysburg has the Conte Roman Ship. That thing is huge with all the rowers! Amazing ship and crew!

I did not pick it up when it was released. Have all the other Conte Ships. Would love to add that to my collection one day.

It is massive. It is residing boxed in my garage. I remember receiving this one from Richard C, it came in a coffin sized box. I had to go back to UPS the following day with an SUV as it would not fit in my car at the time! I bet it is about $125 to ship one of those now.

I almost locked in one of these a year ago. Unfortunately I never heard back from the individual after the first couple emails. Great piece, congrats.

Well, if you are ever driving near Baltimore and you make me an offer I can't refuse, my better half would love to see it sail out of the garage, box and all!!!

Agree nice. Had one lined up in Canada around 4 years ago with a collector, but the deal fell thru. There was some talk at the same time Conte were going to release a new version, but that never happened. Unlikely to see anything like this now with the spiralling costs, mores the pity. Robin.

After looking at my pictures, I better dust. They are big, I just have the one side of the the bank of oars displayed takes up to much room with both banks displayed . I have all of his ships, he did a great job with them. Picked up some inexpensive Romans on Ebay with flat bases and paint them the color of the deck and added a catapult. Conte made some great stuff. His play sets and plastic figures were top notch. His WW2 plastic figures are still the best detailed out there. May be he just put out to much product to quick and it bit him. I wouldn't put it past Thomas Gunn to build a Roman Galley, maybe not a mass production. Very similar to his big wooden carved airplanes that he makes. I can't imagine what it would cost.

That is quite the model, can't imagine the engineering involved.
Did the romans really put stone/block towers on there ships? seems like that would cause some serious pitch and roll in heavy seas?
Ray

I'll bet that digging the foundations wasn't fun either! jb{sm2}

Well,
since my post I have gotten quite a few inquiries on the Galley. I am now seriously considering letting it "sail" away as I hate it sitting in my garage on non display. I just have to figure out an asking price. I am not sure I have ever seen one sold on the secondary market.

Fantastic model. The Viking Longship is also fantastic. Conte did some very nice pieces. A great innovator in many ways; a real shame he is no longer active!

I would love to have that!! I have a place to display it too!
I was fortunate to pick up Viking ship but I think I am missing a set (4-8) rowers. still looks great!

Hello Ray

there are a lot of historical inaccuracies with this ship however that never stopped me from picking it up. The tower you mention is one. I have some picture references where they don't appear yet some inferences can be drawn from the written sources that something existed. More troubling are the dimensions of the ship itself. Still, it is a show stopper and I am happy to have it. I was more concerned with the prow and the ram- lots of interesting archaeology coming from the harbors near Actium which discuss the actual size and dimensions of the ram and it appears the model is spot on- good research or coincidence? You decide! lol :smile2:

I hope you are doing very well

...The tower you mention is one...

Your comment made me take a longer look and think about it, Chris. I wonder if that might not go back, ultimately, to Renaissance depictions of a Roman ship? Many artists had a tendency to depict ancient subjects with contemporary details, like paintings of Biblical subjects, showing ancient Hebrews, or Romans, wearing armor more appropriate to the 1500s. Or do we have any archeological evidence that the Romans would have installed a stone tower on a galley?

Prost!

Nothing I have seen currently my friend though Roman naval subjects aren't my immediate area of interest. I do think you pose an interesting theory and I can see how it would be very plausible. Frankly, the architecture that Conte was shooting for isn't even really Roman in my opinion (strictly speaking on the tower mind you) but looks more late middle ages. It is an odd piece, so odd in fact that I no longer use it for the ship itself but when I play Roleplaying games with my kids and friends- go figure. :p

The inclusion of the tower almost seems like an afterthought. The archways are all very wide (no problems there as it makes it easy to move figures in and out of) but then the upper floor is wide open so posing a sentry on it can pose a problem.

For those of you seeking a visual representation, here is my ship back when I got it. You can see the tower we are discussing.

Hope this picture provides some idea as to the size of the deck, that's a King country tank I believe.

My daughter at attention before we took it out of the wrappings:

She just passed her learners permit 2 weeks ago so it gives you an idea how old these pictures are lol

I think that is a reasonable price, I paid about 1000 Canadian on ebay for the galley and its great add to the collection.
