Hi all, good morning to some. Got my coffee by my computer doing a little browsing of the site. Thought I'd pose a question(s). K&C has created some wonderful scenes sharing them in their Collector magazines and leaflets (#41 is certainly no exception). I was wondering...

How much inspiration do you draw from K&C magazine dioramas?

Do you find yourself purchasing items pictured by K&C to create similar scenes (or) do you just purchase a few of your favorite items to create original dioramas (or) for the "die hard", are you a completist who must have every piece for a theme or sub-theme?

I'd be curious to read your thoughts on the subject.

I think a K&C diorama would encourage me to buy the figures and discourage me from attempting to copy the actual diorama itself. I posted a picture of some glossy cyclists I purchased in Paris partly because of a family interest in cycling and partly because no one on TF had, to my knowledge, done a sports diorama. I now bathe in the glory of having posted the best cycling diorama on TF. {sm4}

I have never got any inspiration from KC dioramas as I find they always show the same actions....In my opinion, they are displays for commercial purposes. And I have a lot of ideas by myself, the problem is to find the suitable figures,suitable poses, armies to realize them ( and of course often the lack of skill).

But I get inspiration by modellers' dios, they have smart ideas, original inspirations, and can create amazing dios with only a few figures. Dios made by Guy or Firebat can show you what I mean.

Great thread starter WO......yeah I certainly get inspired on viewing all of the K&C dio's, regardless of the topic, as I do for most other displays posted on TF. I appreciate they don't do it for everybody, but for me it's wonderful to see how well they work their products into a scene and how well they go together. Plus I really enjoy the crisp clear photography and seeing all the great detail close up.....:salute::

As someone whose never experienced a TS show, the leaflets & collector magazines are the next best thing along with all the member's show reviews and photo's. {bravo}}

My primary basis for collecting toy soldiers or military miniatures is the fun I have preparing displays and dioramas that look as realistic as possible. I have my own ideas on how to make up a diorama using sand, grass, trees, etc. I do not need K&C's dioramas or displays for inspiration, but I do very much enjoy seeing the dioramas prepared by Gordon at K&C as they are really splendid!

I would add a few things here. First off I think it is a Really good thing that K&C puts out the Collector Quarterly magazine. I have Issues #4 all the way to current #41. Each time that they come out every few months I look forward to getting and reading them, along with storing a mint copy away in my K&C quarterly collection. The scenes do showcase the latest product offerings with well done photos of the figures, vehicles, and diorama sets. More to look at and view than
what is posted on the K&C website. So for me.....YES a bit of inspiration is always there for me ! Probably saying a lot of inspiration would be more accurate. One day I hope to plunk down the funds to buy one of Gordon's custom Diorama's.
One Day.......................:wink2: :salute::

For the last 50 years I have been making ww2 dioramas. First plastic in 1/72 scale , later 1/35 and 1/32 scale . Then I continued making dioramas using hand painted metal figures and vehicles in 1/35 scale and 1/32 scale and 54mm. I discovered K&C and other TS manufacturers a few years ago and now I am using these figures and vehicles to make my dios . I never use K&C dioramas as an inspiration . My inspiration is "History" real facts that happened during ww2. That is the base for every dio I make. I have a new idea for a dio in my head, then I start an in depth research about the the scene I want to reproduce in miniature . Once I have gathered all the information I need then I start looking for the figures that match my idea. I buy them and work can begin .
I show you an example herewith

Guy ,

When you match your diorama scene against the picture...WOW !! Incredible !!

Great thread mate.

First of all King and Country dios are great but the actual figures have often been what inspired some of my dioramas.

Ranges:

I buy every single Arnhem (mg) figure and vehicle regardless of how I feel about the actual models as having a full range is a good investment and achievement.

For me I buy things which will fit into my dioramas now as I have little room left for much else. However the figures can influence changes in my dioramas!

My thoughts almost exactly. I don't need the dios to inspire me to buy K&C sets.

I enjoy my K&C soldiers very much. What I look forward to doing is building displays, dioramas and vignettes.
I also enjoy Gordon's work and will study his creations to get ideas. But then the fun starts when I try to figure out how to do the same (or similar). Many of the K&C dioramas show items that don't apply to my eras (K&C AWI and JJD 1812 / RSF), but they can give me an idea for something similar. -- Larry
