Crusades Diorama (1 Viewer)

Hi Michael,

Believe me, I know all about aging eyes. This getting old thing is getting old, as they say. It seems that something else starts to ache or not work as well as it used to almost every week these days. Anyway, I searched and searched for 54mm arrows, but couldn't find anything that was at all acceptable, so I had to figure out a way to make my own. It's a very tedious job to make them. That's why I have so few made at this point, but I'll make more when I put the diorama on a board and make the terrain. I only put feathers on two (opposing) sides of the arrow, but I think that looks pretty good, actually. I've also been making a few spears, using a thin copper rod and white putty. I couldn't find spears either. There are plenty of swords, helmets and shields to find though, from model companies such as Andrea. They require painting though. To make the spears, I put a clump of white putty on the end of the rod and then, after it hardens, keep widdling it and shaping it, using sharp tiny cutting devices, sand paper and a tiny file. Lastly, I paint the spear point and handle. It's difficult to keep the spear point from cracking off at the tip. Talk about tedious! Oh well, I'm actually getting decent results. It would be nice if King & Country would come out with a pack of extra weapons and shields for use in dioramas, just like Marx and other companies used to include in some of their playsets.

George...yea...getting older sucks...hehehe...

your arrows are really nice...two strips of feathers is sufficient...K&C's are a good model...I saw some somewhere...they were plastics from a West American Indian series...I don't remember where...they came in a set of Western suppplies...spears...rifles...wagon wheels...etc...kind of expensive for 6 or 8 arrows...and they were kind of short as I remember...if I find it again...I will send you the link....keep up the great work...I'm going to do some K&C Crusader dios after Thanksgiving company leaves...

Michael,

I look forward to seeing your upcoming K&C Crusader dios. We should have a "clutch" (as Andy said) of new Crusades figures in February, if all goes as planned. I already have a place reserved in my Crusades dio for that mounted Crusader, holding all of the Saracen flags.

George...absolutely beautiful work...your collection is awesome...I love the rolling shields for the archers...I made one myself...it turned out okay...I used yours for a model...the "running dog" looks great too...do you remember where you got him...:cool::cool:...very cool stuff...

please post the link to the archer's shield again when you get time...

George...I have admired your reproduction of Crusader scenes for a long time...I love your passion for this series...I am about ready to pull the trigger on some of those beautiful Black Hawk figures you add to your K&C's...I quietly finished collecting all the K&C Crusader/Saracen series and am ready to do some photos...I have supplemented my K&C's with some Del Prados...both foot and mounted...not as nice as the K&C's but a great value and more than adequate as well as a pretty good match...I will post some photos of them...if you can find them...they are usually $9.95 per foot and $19.95 per mounted...usually cheaper if you search for them...I love this series and will continue to collect it as K&C issues new releases...I spent so much time building my castle that I have a spot in my heart for this series......hahaha...for real...

George...

here are some Del Prados...these are the Knights...they also have Arabs and Saracens...

I have seen the mounted figures on Ebay for as low as $9.99 several times...foot figures even cheaper...

while they are not as well painted as the K&C's...

THEY ARE A BARGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!

the sculpting is excellent..the size is perfect...but you can see on the painting...they went outside the line a little on some of the figures...

the poses are pretty good...some idle...some action...

I really think they are a bargain and you would enjoy them in your collection...

the only problem...the mounted figures...they had no bases...and would not stand safely on their own...I had to make the bases...I used Sculpey clay...you can buy it at Walmart...$7.00...

shape a base out of clay...press the hooves in...remove the figure...bake the base for 12 minutes as directed...let cool...flock/paint...glue the hooves in the imprint...pretty easy...a very hard and sturdy base...

these are super cheap pieces and pretty good too...

I love this guy in the top picture...he looks flat "grizzly"......

I apologize about the dust...spiderwebs...lint and debris on them...they have been sorely neglected...

Michael,

That first guy with the funky metal hat, holding a spear, looks like he's been at his post for quite some time - long enough to get cobwebs. Now that's a dedicated soldier!

Thanks for the info. on making bases for the mounted figures. I actually already do have a few of the foot figures, such as the Hospitaler and the guy with the long spear on the opposite end of that row. I agree that the sculpting is quite nice. I don't yet have any of the mounted figures. Some of them look pretty nice and you're certainly right about the price being a bargain. Thanks for posting the pictures of the figures up close.
