css.texas was a little over 200ft long and just under 50 ft wide, so my deck area is 4ft long by around 10 1/2 inches wide. i have marked an outline down 1 half of the board and altered it until i was happy with the profile, i have then cut 1 side of the board along the marks, take the offcuts and position the on the other side of the board...mark them and cut.

from board to ships deck

once the outline was cut i have sanded and planed the edge and tidied up the jigsaw marks, next ...(and i was`nt sure why i did it) i turned the deck over and ran a sloped router bit around the edge, i would normally leave this squared, however the texas was described as having a diamond shape to her casemate so this will help achieve this later..next using the offcuts from the deck i have cut out sections at 45 degreees for the casemate inner supports, mark out the casemate on the deck approx 1/3 the length of the ship, but positioned a little closer to the stern leaving a longer prow. glue the sections into position.

css.texas how to make life hard for yourself

for some reason at this point i have turned her over and decided to have a go at a hull, with hindsight a mistake but i`ve started now, the hull sections are approx.4 inches deep they looked about right at that, professional modellers and people who know what they are doing please look away now for a little while .. i have aligned the sections by eye along the boat and when i was happy marked nailed & glued them down, using strips from the css.texas kit

i then glued nailed twisted forced and hit with a hammer the strips of pine to get them roughly where i wanted them, i got this far in around 4 hours and then called it a day... can you see what it is yet ?

I love the beveled look...You are more tool savvy than I, but I am watching to see if I can cheat a little and buy already made substitutes..Michael

Re: css.Texas Hull

one side of the hull almost done, just some tidying up to do... i was not happy with the casemate, so off ti came, i have lowered theoverall height by about 1/4 inch and widened the space between the 2 fore & 2 aft casemate supports by around 1 1/2 inches...looking at it i think it has made a world of difference, ...i think this one is going to be bonny!
