If you are even remotely interested in the Highlander Clans or The Jacobite Rebellion...

you gotta see this DVD...

"Culloden"...

once banned from television in England and Australia...

my cousin loaned it to me the other day...

it is as dark a picture as you can imagine of the battle...

the Jacobites never had a chance...

it's filmed as if a modern day news crew was interviewing the soldiers on both sides and also in a sort of documentary style...

strange questions were asked to the Highlanders like...

why are you here...
when did you last eat...
why are you using this battle strategy...

it must rate as one of the most lopsided mismatched battles in history...

the Highlanders had no real life leadership experience on their side...
most were forced to fight as "human rent" for their landowner Clan leaders...
had nothing to fight with...
no weapons or ammunition...
bickering between Clans...
were half starved...
outmanned...
outtrained...
forced to serve through pressment or owed money to Clan leaders...

it was an anticipated bleak outcome at best...

in fact of the 9,000 British troops brought to the field...

the British troops that were of Highlander Scottish descent...actually outnumbered the Highlander Clans total forces...

literally brother against brother...

it's a horrific gory account of a slaughter of poorly misled men with no hope or leadership...

No quarter was the order of the day...

the British...led by William Augustus...The Duke of Cumberland...was nicknamed "The Butcher" after this battle...

in revenge for Prestopans...absolute no quarter given...

out of 2,000 killed...there were less than 150 Highlanders taken as prisoners...

the few pieces of artillery the Highlanders had were 3 pounders...but all they brought were 4 pound balls...

useless pieces of artillery that they couldn't even fire...

I'm going to watch it again...I may make a few more comments on this...watch it if you can...it's a tough watch...

Mike, I saw this on PBS decades ago. I do recall the brutality towards the civilians and the Highlanders getting far the worse in the battle dying in twitching heaps .
I was about 12 and both my folks were working nights. No monster movie ever scared me and I was never afraid of being home all nite alone but the violence and disregard for human life was disturbingly real. Spooked me.

Oh man! I was about to post the same thing. PBS aired it decades ago in Chicago and I must have been about the same age. Didn't know at the time what was going on, truely violent film for its time. Something about the B&W film seemed to make it all the more real. I do believe it was the mystery of it that started to get me interested in military history.

Wow, we are on a roll here, I'll third these comments, saw it on PBS in the early 1970's when I was 11 or 12 at the most, funny that Belle and Blade has it, Steve has every movie ever made about war, he's quite a finder of all things military............

Well...

the black and white somehow made it more graphic to me...

or maybe more realistic...

for a 1964 production...it was pretty gory...

I'm guessing there was some embellishment...

but I have heard horror stories of the atrocities committed against the Scots in the aftermath...

the sad thing to me was the forced servitude...

one guy had a potato patch 30 feet long and was obligated to fight for the Clan land owner...:(

anyway...I'm surprised anybody on here had even heard of this movie...

Fact is, it wasn’t just an English verses the Scots battle. Never good when you fight your own.

I saw this one waaaay back as well. I rented it recently from NETFLIX. He really got the story across with a small cast.

Peter Watson also did a "what if " about nuclear war in Britain and a long film about the Paris Commune. Watson's premise was that TV was available to cover these events.
