It seems only a short time ago, the $CAN was higher than the $US by as much as 5%. But the last several months have seen a steep drop in the value of currencies against the $US. The $CAN is worth only $0.77 US. The $AUS is down to $0.74 US and the Kiwi is at $0.66.

For me, a $45 figure now costs $66 CAN including the VAT while a $180 AFV now costs $265 CAN incl. VAT.

Has anyone else noted this? Any strategies to deal with it.

Like you have pointed out Terry, it's only the US collectors that are getting the cheap price for toy soldiers.

Such is life ......

Pound is strong against the euro and the dollar at the moment ^&grin

It's easy solution for me, I stop buying Toy soldiers for now ^&grin and concentrating on building my model planes which I still have quite a few kits in my stash.

Buy them as unpainted castings - at around half price - IF your supplier will sell 'em that way!:D jb

Hi Terry,

I believe that the devaluations that you cite are related to the slowdown in China and the reliance of some economies on commodity exports such as oil, minerals and agricultural products. The bad new is that there's nothing that you can do it. The good news is that your currency will go right back up as the worldwide market for commodities improves. This of course assumes that there's not a global-crash! In the mean-time, I'd do a lot of window-shopping if I were you. I know that may sound painful to a collector, but that's really a better alternative than buying TS-product with a temporarily weakened $CAN.:)

one tip with exchange rates that saves me lots of cash is wherever possible to use real money rather than paypal . I am saving in excess of £300 on some of my "tank" orders from the US just by using my debit card rather than paypal . I am importing in the region of $10k a month so if i am saving that % on all orders then it adds up .

keep your snide assertions to yourself . My business is fully tax visible , i pay vat and import duties on all imports and declare all sales

Good for you but after you paid VAT and postage it not much cheaper than buying from the UK from my experience ?

Because "Less Is More" ^&grin

I wonder the effect on sales in the low $ value countries where it seemed a lot of the new member growth was happening.

I gave a couple of Canadians some good deals because of the exchange rate but got lamblasted on the shipping.

There's no real easy solution with dipping exchange rates other than biting the bullet or simply buying less as many other members have mentioned.

Personally, I get to appreciate my collection more during these lean periods and spend some quality time building dio's etc.

Although it can greatly reduce my spending capacity, it certainly doesn't reduce my enthusiasm for the hobby.
