Just read an interesting book by Steve Alexander, "G.A. Custer to the Little Big Horn", very good with lots of photos and coloured illustrations. On particular piece that I found interesting was the possibility that one of Custer's pistols had been found. As the commentary states it was sold to a scrap metal dealer and is lacking the hammer and grip but does conform to the general descriptions of the weapon. A pity that the Sioux who sold it couldn't be asked the history of the piece. Trooper

Sorry about that. The computor threw a tantrum before I could add attachment. Have now used a bigger hammer and hope it now behaves. Trooper

Wasn't Harold Hardrada's hammer was it?? {sm4}{sm4}

Interesting story. Would be neat to see if that actually proves to be the case. I really get into reading about "history's mysteries".

Interesting post Alan but matching that gun to one of Custer's Webley Bulldogs is going to be a long shot even if they do find a like matched pistol bullet which they haven't yet.

When they found the Custer brothers bodies- scattered around them were 17 spent shells supposedly fired by Autie's .50 calibre Remington Sporting rifle. Could be he didn't even get a chance to draw his pistols before receiving either of his two fatal wounds...... or maybe it was Tom Custer firing the Remington due to Custer already having been mortally wounded at Medicine Coulee.

Apparently the Sioux/Cheyenne left no 7th cavalry weapons on the field-as you would expect but I gotta agree with Chris if only the gun or the Sioux who sold it could/had talked to reveal History's Mysteries-Fascinating!
