On a slightly different note, I have a cousin who truly believes he was on a SEALs team in Viet Nam. He'll tell you stories, but he was never there although you couldn't convince him he wasn't. Even if you point out that his military papers say he wasn't there, he'll tell you it was a top secret mission and they didn't want his record to reflect he was there.

So what?
I tell the ladies - 1st Gulf war - SAS - Helicopters - POW - Escape - Gasoline & Ammo Dump - Distinguished Service Order - My Mate Prince Phillip - Hush Hush - Can't Talk About It - Blah, Blah, Blah....

Hey I captured a Viet Cong flag back in 1972! It was at a demonstration at the College Of The Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The guy wanted it back 'cause his mom made it for him. She made the star the wrong shape. True story! Navy ROTC...nobody messed with us!

Apparently this guy has been a celeb in St Mere Eglise,he held court in a local bar and there is a plaque to his heroism in the town,he even has a house nearby.(i read he has fled back to the states)Not sure if we should feel sorry for this old guy who got carried away with himself or is it an insult to those who really did drop into that town on the 6th June 44?.

With these kind of things sometimes the story takes on a life of it's own and before you know it - it's easier to keep it going than admit the truth.
I feel a bit sorry for the guy really.

I wish I could ask my uncle as he was there with the 82nd, it was his first jump.

I was looking into a story about a Rhode Island Vivandiere in the Civil War who's story may have been a phony. One of the few surviving CW vets in the 20th Century that claimed to have seen her in battle was an interesting character as he had written himself into several incidents that his unit was in. He also claimed to have talked to Lincoln. There was nobody still alive to contradict him and the newspapers enjoyed his stories. Looking into his record as a source for the Vivandiere, I found that he could have been in a position to make the stories true but other soldiers that had left written records of the incidents named names but not his!

In my life I have met a statisically anomolous number of ex-CIA and NSA operatives who seem to have come in from the cold and into the bars. There seems to be something about me that they feel they can confide in me ("They told us we were going to Florida, but we knew we were in Honduras.."). I'm supposed to have heard things I probably shouldn't. If I disappear mysteriously someday, tell my story:)- Emily

I got stuck on a bus trip to a miniatures convention with the "Guy nobody else would sit with." He told me all his storries that the other collectors knew were BS but I did't yet. One was that he was in "Nam" and captured by female Viet Cong. He then fell asleep with his elbow in my ribs.

Lot of that "Nam" stuff going around,,best is the order of age,,I never noticed Bns of 5 year olds.

I do not believe this!!!!!! Back in the War of 1812, when I fought, we would never had told these kind of falsehoods:!!!!:)

lol H, can just imagine the Scottish bull you come out with in the bar:D. My Fav was when I was six months old had an operation on my side, being so young they never stitched it up they used clips so it was quite a wide scar. So it went from my right side to the middle of my back. Anyway of course the scar grew with me, so when I was a young Hussar on the beach or swimming pool the girls all asked what the scar was. So it turned into a shark attack lol, but I fought it off and survived:rolleyes: I was quite the hero but as you say it = results. Dined out on that one for years lol.
Bernard.

My father had huge exit wounds on his back from WW II. In the early sixties a nice German girl at the beach asked him how he got the scars. He fibbed and said a bobcat clawed him.

Yeah....:D:D....I've used the "Shark Story" as well Bernard.
It's another good one.

In my case, I try and keep the BS as close to "incredible - but just might be true" as possible. Keeping the straight face is the challenging part.
;);)....:):)

Cheers Mate
