Gents,

I did not watch the "Da' Oscars" last night as we were coming home from a soccer game in BFE (pm me if you want to know what BFE stands for) Brenhem, TX. HOWEVER COMMA, I did read about it this morning and was frankly shocked that Bradley Cooper did not get the Oscar. Now, to be fair I have not seen The Theory of Everything nor Birdman, BUT I did see American Sniper (twice), Foxcatcher, The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game. I really thought that after three nominations Cooper was going to walk away with the stature, but I was wrong. In fact, I am always wrong when it comes to Oscars. I think that is the reason why I don't watch the Oscars any more because...well...they suck.

For all the hype and hoopla the Oscars certainly do not take a populist view. When I look back to 1980 and wonder why Kramer vs. Kramer won Oscars over Apocalypse Now (one of my all time favorites) it makes you scratch your head. To further the blow, Apocalypse Now won only two out of 8 Academy nominations in the 1980 Academy Awards. Yup, two: one for best editing and best cinematography. Scratch...scratch.

Yes, I will be running out to see Birdman and The Theory of Everything. I have too...they won.

I gave up on the Oscars when Saving Private Ryan lost to Shakespeare in Love.

Hollywood is full of liberal yahoos, no shocker that Birdman won so many awards, a movie about an actor, color me surprised, not.

I knew American Sniper would win jack; no best picture, no best actor, Eastwood wasn't even nominated for best director.

No thanks, I've got better things to do with four hours of my life.

I did not know that Warrior (was Overseas at the time...no internet yet). Y'know the only "War Movie" I know that won them all was Platoon. I was a kid and remember seeing it in the theaters and the news of the Oscars afterwards. I could be wrong, but there seems to be a anti-war movie nomination sentiment in ole HollyWood. I don't know, I am just speculating.

It is a shame that American Sniper did not get the recognition that it deserved...............Saw the movie in the theater and can't wait to
pick it up on DVD.

I watched them...it was pretty entertaining...I did see Sniper and Unbroken at the theater...they were both pretty good...I have not seen Budapest or Birdman...I will watch Birdman...but I mostly want to see Whiplash...I have always liked J K Simmons...even back from the series Oz where he played the leader of the Aryans at Oswald Penitentiary...he played a sadistic, brutal s.o.b. in that...he must be a good actor...cause he didn't make it on his looks...

There have been at least a dozen war pictures that have won Best Picture through the years such as Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Wings, All Quiet on the Western Front, Patton, The Deer Hunter, and several more. The war picture does occasionally win dispite the liberal views that prevail in Hollywood, thank goodness. -- Al

Always been a fan of Simmons. Watched him for years as Dr. Spoda on the Law and Order shows. -- Al

Not true. Other than the probable notable omission of Saving Private Ryan, war themed pictures have done well. In addition to those mentioned, Gone With the Wind, Mrs. Miniver, Casablanca, The Best Years of Our Lives , From Here to Eternity, Platoon, Dances With Wolves, Schindler's List, Braveheart, The English Patient and The Hurt Locker have won Best Picture.

This show is way too long. They try to get around that not by shortening the show, but by making jokes about how long it is. Which only makes it longer. No one cares about 90% of the awards and by the time they get to the interesting ones almost everyone on the the east coast has gone to bed. Keep it to two hours, have a trap door that opens if any acceptance speech goes longer than 30 seconds, and cut the silly categories or hand them out before the show and scroll them real fast like they do with the credits at the end of movies on Sci FY channel (which always makes me laugh). I couldn't even sit through the recent SNL anniversary show which was not only long but made me feel old since the few cast members that I remember looked like they had checked out of Sunnybrook Rest Home to attend or were already dead.

Agreed; shave it down to two hours and ****can most of the award presentations that nobody cares about (Best sound editing, Best screenplay; most of the people who win these awards yammer on for 25 minutes about nothing) and get to the good stuff.

Most of the jokes are as funny as a vaudeville routine; Hollywood will never do it because afterall, it's a night about them, they could care less what the viewers of the show think.

One of the comments/jokes by Neil Patrick Harris was that American Sniper did more box office $'s than the rest of the nominated movies combined. Did 300m plus whereas Birdman did 36m and Whiplash 10m. If you were Eastwood would you want 10 x as many people watch it or got an Oscar.

All,

I say lets make our "Oscars". Lets call them the "Orsons" (a la Orson Welles who fought constantly with Hollywood) and vote online for our favorites. Thus, giving the buying and viewing public an opportunity have THIER vote counted...me and you included.

Best Zombie Horror/Comedy goes to Dead Snow 2! A highly competitive category.

Best Horror film: The Babadook.

Combat,

OK you got me! I just watched the trailer for Babadook and whoa man I got to check this flick out! Never heard of it before, but man that trailer has me hooked! I will get back with you the Horror Film Category...

Speaking of Horror flicks there a couple that get me all worked up! They are:

The Exorcist (of course)
The Entity with Barbara Hershey

and of recent:

The Conjuring...clap-clap

I guess it helps when all these of movies are loosely based on true stories, so It makes them a little more creepy.

How about both, nothing wrong with that.

I guess popular/successful at the box office does not translate into winning awards.

Just keep directing great movies Mr Eastwood and I'll keep throwing down my money to see them.

I wouldn't go see Birdman if somebody paid my way and loaded me up with a bottomless bucket of popcorn.

Combat mentioned the SNL show. He was right, Chevy Chase looked and acted god awfull, Jane Curtains teeth were brown, Bill Murray looked 100 years old and I,m sure that wife, babe, with Eddie Murphy, would have been his girl if he was just a regular guy, NOT!
Having said the above in those early years I would not miss that show, "Jane you ignorant ****" I still laugh at that 40 years later.
