caught the Grand Budapest Hotel last night...

it was pretty entertaining...
a strange tale...
I guess it would be classified a comedy/drama...
a lot of the characters were somewhat disguised in make-up and or props...
for example...
I thought it was Willem Dafoe...
but wasn't sure til I saw the credits...
it started off slow...
but I couldn't turn it off til I saw the conclusion of the bizarre tale being told...
I was pleasantly surprised...
a pretty good watch

what an all star cast........

Ralph Fiennes
F. Murray Abraham
Adrien Brody
Willem Dafoe
Jeff Goldblum
Harvey Keitel
Jude Law
Bill Murray
Edward Norton

I watched Grand Budapest Hotel without knowing the first thing about it. After about two minutes, I started thinking this is very familiar. The cast, style, dialogue etc was very similar to "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and "Moonrise Kingdom." Turns out it is the same director. I think he makes the same movie over and over in different settings. If you liked GBH, you should try the others.

Gents,

Grand Budapest Hotel is based off a compilation of various Stefan Zweig novels. The most recent novel I had read from Zweig is The Post Office Girl (I just b-backed a review on it from Jazzieums recommendation) and it is on target with the . If you have not read this book-do so!

I think Wes Anderson, the director, said that Zweig inspired this movie as -- having done some reading of some of Zweig's works -- the characters in the movie are not actually ones would write but the milieu that Anderson brings out -- Austria/Germany between the wars -- is Zweig. Ralph Fiennes, the proprietor, does bear somewhat of a resemblance to Zweig.

Here is a very good article about the movie: a conversation between Anderson and George Prochnik (who is a noted Zweig authority).

Zweig was a prolific writer, quite accomplished in fine literature but was very popular. He wrote dozens of stories, biographies and literary criticism but only one full length novel, Beware of Pity, which I recommend highly.

finally caught "Whiplash" the other day...
it's a good watch...

I have always liked J K Simmons...
from his role as Schillinger on HBO's Oz to the State Farm commercials...
just a regular guy but a very good dramatic actor...

it's an entertaining show...
but probably not one that you would watch over and over...
