I've never bought an FL piece before, mostly because I was unaware of their existence until recently (I primarily shop online and none of my dealers carry them). While they are pricey, at least online they seem to be quite detailed, and with other manufacturers raising prices, I find myself considering testing the waters. I also like that something like the DAK line is small enough that I could jump in.

Before I do, I've got some questions I'm hoping you can answer here:

Can someone explain to me the difference between the two different Panzer III's that FL is offering? Both in terms of the actual tanks and the the models. And, for anyone who's seen or owns both, how do they compare with K&C's Panzer III?

Speaking of K&C does the DAK FL pieces match up with those of other manufacturers (namely, K&C and CS)?

And without disparaging other manufacturers, can I ask what FL collectors think justifies the price?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

This question has been raised/asked before. If you do a search here you will find the answer.
As for FL items justify the price or not, I think it all depends on individual collectors, and in this case FL collectors think the price do justify for what they get. I've have not owned any FL pieces but they are very attempting since the sculpting and painting look top notch. If I do get into FL, I'm interested in the Samurai and Crusaders.

I think it is up to the buyer. I don't buy vehicles that expensive , but I can't say I never will. I have bought many ranges of figures from FL. A lot of toy soldiers look better in person to me, and this is certainly true of FL. My guess is if you like their stuff online you will love it in person.

I don't have the DAK PanzerIII but I do have the grey Stalingrad PanzerIII.....No question the best PanzerIII ever released IMO ...bar none....Extremely detailed....Excellent Paint and Shading.....Without a doubt my favorite AFV....A little more expensive then the competition but well worth....Closest thing to "expert 1:35 scale modeling"......(but definitely 1:30)......Check out some photos on prior threads.

Vezzolf i have many FL figures ( Naps & AWI )
I do not have any tanks or truck and never seen one
but i hear that they are very light in weight
Why is that and what are they made off
Thank u

Hello Maple Leaf......My appraisal in all honesty.....FL Tanks are made of Hard Resin which allows for much better detailing and painting... not possible with polystone...They are light in weight but not as light as some would have you think...This was a concern I had when I purchased my first Stalingrad Stug...very adequate weight for a static model...not an issue at all...the visual appeal of the grey Panzer III more then makes up for the reduced weight....Place the FL panzerIII next to any manufacturers polystone panzer.....and you will see the difference in detail...no contest....First Legion wins hands down....I only hope that we will see a Tiger,King Tiger,or Panther from First Legion....I believe a T-34/76 may be on the way soon:wink2:....Hope this helps

The only other thing which you asked which I don't see answered is that all the Panzer III's are the same late issue Ausf variant and have no other differences apart from paint and unit variant. unless, you add in the Ostketten but, the tank stays the same.

Hope it helps
Mitch

If the Stalingrad Grey Panzer III was offerred in two or three turret numbers I would own 2- 3 by now.... I did ask Matt about this......It would make for a great diorama.......They are that good:salute:: ...I'm sure we will see more great AFV's released from First Legion....Maybe even a Grey Panzer IV (short barrel) will be arriving on the eastern front{sm4}

I did think they were available?? Has Frank posted pics of different unit numbers in his dio's or, did he get these redone. It would have been a good idea to do this for collectors or offered the option

No I think this 2nd number was not available or in production...#515 might have belonged personally to Matt which he sold to Frank.....The #525 turret was the stock FL item.....As I said Mitch if it was available I'd buy it in a heartbeat....Best Regards Frank

Cheers for that

To expand a bit on what Mitch said all of the Pz.IIIs offered by First Legion are essentially the same model, Sd.Kfz.141/1 Panzer III Ausf.J. They all feature the 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun which is the long barreled version of the 5cm which first appeared in December 1941 (chassis #72001) part way through the Ausf.J production run. The models also feature the 2cm spaced bolt on armor on the front of the hull superstructure and gun mantlet. This was often retrofitted in the field. The British referred to this long barreled varient as the Mark III special.

The units modeled are:
  • Grey camo - 24.Panzerdivision
  • Whitewashed - 14.Panzerdivision
  • Desert camo - 15.Panzerdivision
  • Desert camo - 21.Panzerdivision

They all come with a single crew figure and all feature an improvised MG34 AA MG mount with the exception of the 15.Panzerdivision version which doesn't have the AA MG. As Mitch noted the whitewashed version comes with Winterketten which are bolt on track extensions that were required in the east.

#515 was a special turret number Matt made for me on request.

To answer your question about material of FL afvs.

Well look at all 1/35th kits that modellers buy all the time.. All high quality ones are made in ....
resin ! No polystone here... I think that resin is actually the best material to capture all the tiny details from a mold.. even better than metal .

cheers,

alex

Well Vezzolf and Alex i just ordered the SdKfz 232
and the panzer crew with map and one with bino
If they change the stupid long faces on figures with helmets
i will add to crew but so far only ones with soft hat look decently normal.
Anxious to receive it to see in front of me.
Maple Leaf
