Danish film 1864 (1 Viewer)

The mini series started on BBC4 in the UK last Saturday. Never watched it but will catch it on BBC iPlayer

Cheers

Don't get too excited . Nothing much military based in the first two episodes other than Bismarck playing with his toy soldiers on the parlour floor . Its more of a love story than a war story ...... also bizarrely Danish with some bestiality ( man and cow ) and some other strange scenes that have no relevance to any story line . Will watch eps 3 and 4 next week to see if it gets any better .

There is a pretty good couple of scenes later on during the Danish retreat.

Having just finished watching the DVD set of "1864" I would like to add my two-pennuth:

I found it a very intelligent, moving (to the point of tears in quite a few places) and harrowing portrayal of a War (Denmark against the German Federation) and it's effects on the peoples involved.

Yes, it is a very slow burner and much more effective for that. I didn't find the sub-titles a problem - in fact I found it fascinating hearing the characters
speaking in their own language. It is a love story - nothing wrong with that surely - but also a history lesson of a War of which I knew absolutely nothing -
how it came about, was fought and how it ended.

The Battle scenes stand along side any other films you may care to mention - exceeding many in my opinion.

It flits between the present and the past and all comes together in the final episode. Excellent acting, fine music score -

I recommend it to anyone with a heart and a soul.
