Deciding which range to buy from next?. (1 Viewer)

Does anyone else agonize over what to get, and then change their mind several times before they either hit the button or make the call?.

Please tell me its not just me!

I tried to avoid this dilemma by concentrating on SOHK, then as a side line picked up a couple of Eighth Army and WW1 german bits that interested me... but avoided going crazy there. But, with the lack of SOHK releases last year I gave in and started grabbing some of the Crimean series stuff that I liked, whilst still waiting for those promised SOHK (Chinese pirate) releases or any new SOHK, really... and rolling my K&C kitty over each month. Eventually after month after month of no SOHK apart from some lamp posts, I made the decision to quit. Bought some of the sets I was still chasing and spent the money on plane tickets and travel.

Now I have only two definite items on my list, the Rolls Royce Armoured car and the SOHK special paint of the Sedan Chair (take note Brett) ... and maybe one more Crimean set, then apart from the occasional collectors club figure that interests me, that's it. Finit. Endsville.... I hope.

But, it's difficult giving it up. I'm tempted to go for the early WW1 stuff in more depth... yes I like the Kaiser's wagon... and I am intrigued by what may be replacing the K&C UK Crimea series, so it's bloody hard not starting on something new. There's just too many good things to choose from.

You will like this a lot. I got it for my wife's collection last year. :salute::

For this NEWBIE of 3 year collecting after a 50 year absence, it was an easy decision to choose 1 range only - and I decided on NAPS only because it was the only range of the ones I liked that I didn't play at, or have as soldiers as a kid. Also, my older brother, who is an HO train guy suggested I do something other than WWII, which he knew I did to death as a kid.

I've spent the 3 years doing a tremendous amount of back buying to bring myself up to date with Waterloo related NAPS. I feel real good that I'm ahead of the NAP curve, and glad to not see any in the near future.

However, to keep myself from being bored with 1 range, I decided about a 11/2 ago to start buying 1 piece(set) from every range and sub range that was available. To keep it simple I only buy single foot soldiers - no cavalry, or multiple figure sets, and I haven't chased after any retired ranges that weren't available. When I started, I began with all the ranges that were at about $19-21 and worked my way up the price rise. I just assumed they would retire quicker. Most of my purchases for K&C come from Tim Tyler at Troops of time. We marveled at the fact that I was making a lot of these purchases just as Andy was retiring them. And at first, because many of the older ranges always had either marching or standing at attention available, the collection had a sort of "Marching to War" look to it. But as I discovered more availability of other poses, I began to pick from more interesting figures. In each dispatches I'll pick out something and put it on a list. Sometimes, more than 1 of a sub range that I like, so I'll list them all, and then pick the one I like best at the time I buy - choices, choices. And now I have about 60 sets mixed in with a few from other mfgs. in a grouping surrounding and on 3 Lacrosse trophies, along with a few cannon. Currently, my list has 15 wants on it including WS181, Volksturm Old Man, from the new dispatches. When I figure out how to send pics, I'll put some up of this collection and the NAPS.

Well, that's about enough WINDBAG from me.

Cheers

I've become very deliberate in my purchasing habit the last few years. I used to focus on a small number of lines ( MG, D-Day Brits, WS, BOB, FOB ) with a smattering of Naps, MK's and RAF. As my den has filled up with boxes, space has become a serious issue. Secondly economics is dictating my purchases. The result is a sharper focus on existing lines and less dabbling in others. I used to have a small sampling of just about everything. I don't do that anymore, nor do I collect in particular as many vehicles/tanks as before. My collection more and more is figure focused.
The only new direction I may consider is the ancients K&C might be doing in the future and ofcourse the new LAH. I've always wanted old men, various sized HJ boys, lounge chairs, SS waiters, band members, nurses, young women etc all flashing the Heil Hitler......NOT!!!
