Delhi Durbar 1903 (1 Viewer)

Thank you, Pat. I think I will muster all my courage, ask Ana and try my artistic talents.

If the damage were any more serious than that, I would not hesitate to immediately ask for professional help.

I have, by-the-way, decided to beef up my Kashmir Infantry by adding two additional figures.

It is interesting that my first two elephants are from the very south of India (Travancore) and the very north (Kashmir):

Nice Variety!

I think your collection is well on its way!

As for the touch up there are plenty of good quality paints available in gloss to use. If Ana can recommend a brand that is available here then obviously use it if not drop me a note and I will see if I can recommend a good alternative.

All the best

Dave

Dave - We use acryllic lacquer which we have prepared specially for us. I'd recomend Testors within the commercial brands. They are very good.

Ana, thank you again for your quick response.

Looking at the choice of Testors, are you referring to "Acrylic Paints" or "Lacquers". I would think only latter have the required gloss.

As to the color itself, would you agree that I should be using "Chevy Engine Red" to touch up the scabbard from the officer of the Kashmir Infantry?

Andreas - within the Testors line, you should use only the lacquers. The Chevy engine red looks quite similar to our Ferrari Red :D You can try that one to see if it matches.

Acryllic paints can also be used for those who are more familiar with them. The gloss finish can be applied with simple transparent nail varnish :)

Pat, Andanna, Dave, (sorry if I forget someone)

Many thanks for posting these pictures !! That's a great thread !

BGDD display update: I added the foliage. Although I am hereby taking some artistic license, I am happy with how it looks. The date palms are from JG Miniatures.

Andanna,
Coming along superbly! Where is this display in your home? Obviously no rugrats if the BGDD is at low level!:p
Happy New Year!

Hi Anadanna,

The palms and the back ground really help bring the display to life! Looking forward to your next set of pictures.

Happy New Year

Inserting myself into the display as an avid spectator:

P.S.: It appears that I did not have the background printed long enough. I might have to correct that at some point if the collection continues to grow.

Another nice addition to your Durbar. Thanks for the pictures, I think that 3rd elephant may be my favourite thus far.

Hi Andanna,

Thats a great looking set! I think you are going to catch Pat pretty quick! Looking forward some more discussion.

All the best

Dave

Thank you for all the kind words and the encouragement.

Dave promoted discussion in his post. Here you go:

As you probably know from either having looked at Beau Geste's offering or at my album that displays a short description for each photo, the third elephant is the one from Sikkim. Sikkim is a state in the north of India bordering inter alia with Nepal. It is the only state in India with an ethnic Nepalese majority.

In 1903, it was not (yet) part of India, but it appears as if Sikkim's Maharaja received guidance from the British governor. This would explain why Sikkim felt compelled to send a representative to the Delhi Durbar in 1903.

For more on Sikkim's history, I may refer to:
http://www.sikkimipr.org/GENERAL/HISTORY/history_of_sikkim.htm.

I am elaborating on this as although the Maharaja accepted the invitation to the Delhi Durbar, he at the last moment deputed his son and heir, Sidkyong Tulku, the Maharaj-Kumar, to be his representative. This is confirmed by one of the photos showing the elephant from Sikkim during the Delhi Durbar showing a child on the Sikkim State Elephant (see photo below).

Hence Beau Geste has taken some artistic license with this model. Having an adult sit on the elephant probably looks better in the scheme of things - but what are your thoughts?
