Hi Guys,

Allow me to introduce to you one of the finest comic book artists in the world of British Illustration... Denis McLoughlin (1918-2002).

In a career that spanned almost seven decades Denis produced hundreds of book jackets... countless comic strips... and an amazing number of Children’s Christmas Annuals.

I first discovered Denis’ work during the 1950’s when for several years I was given a ‘Buffalo Bill Wild West Annual’ by one of my Aunts each Christmas from about 1956 until the last one appeared in 1961.

As a budding illustrator myself I loved Denis’ work and attention to detail. It was obvious that he loved the Wild West and everything about it although he never, alas, got to visit America.

Over the years I treasured all of my “Buffalo Bill Annuals” and have kept them to this day... even buying editions which I did not originally own on eBay.

One of my all-time favourite Denis McLoughlin ‘Buffalo Bill’ stories was called ‘Little Wolf Goes Home.’ It featured a kneeling Indian Scout pointing the way to a halted U.S. Cavalry Column somewhere in the Old West.

Obviously Denis’ own interpretation was based on those three classic John Ford directed movies, “She Wore A Yellow Ribbon”... “Fort Apache” and ... “Rio Grande”.

A couple of years ago the original artwork illustration came up for sale in London and I was fortunate to be able to buy it and put it into the K&C collection.

Soon, you will see K&C’s own version of Denis McLoughlin’s original conception as part of our ‘John Ford’s Cavalry’ range... I hope we can do this fine artist proud.

Best wishes to one and all,
Andy.

You will do Dennis proud without doubt. I thank him for giving you the inspiration to produce these wonderful figures. K&C horses are so well done and a column of them, well we are talking magic. You have come up trumps Andy with this theme. Looking forward to the whole range which you have in store for your loyal collectors, bring them on. Robin. :salute::

what a nice story Andy.😃
I look forward to seeing the K&C's own version.
Have a good trip Mate!

Andy,

Thank you for introducing me to Mr. McLoughlin's work. The attention to detail is wonderful, right down to the footprints in the sand leading from Little Wolf's mount, held by a trooper in the background, to Little Wolf, where he is guiding the Cavalry column. You are very fortunate to have the original artwork in your collection. I look forward to seeing your interpretation of this excellent illustration.^&cool^&cool

Andy your post has brought back fond memories of my youth and comic book collecting. Russ Heath illustrated two famous comic books here in the states G.I. Combat and Our Army at war. As a young child in the 70’s I collected these two comics And he was always spot on in his rendition of German armour. I’ve enclosed a piece.

Another interesting comic that came out during the late 70’s was called Blitzkrieg. Covers the German soldier during WW2.

I collected and read all the war comics as a kid, but never saw this one. Looks interesting.

I remember my childhood reading Sargent Rock and Combat, after comming home from school and finishing homework. It was the best time of the day!

I still have that Sargent Rock comic somewhere. Those Combat comics were full of action and excellent. I had Pearl Harbor, Tarawa and one where a US Destroyer got sunk during a sea battle with the Japanese. I think I had Remagen bridge one too.
