Reinforcements to the 52nd Battalion of the 13th Infantry Brigade, being allotted to their companies. In the defence of the Dernancourt, positions against the massed assaults of four German divisions, on 4 April 1918, the 12th and 13th Australian Brigades defeated the enemy in a battle which has become historic.
The Australian casualties were heavy, but "the losses of the enemy were awful. It was sheer savage slaughter of Germans the whole day long." Identified fifth from left, facing camera, is Lieutenant Fernside, next to him, facing company is Captain (Capt) W. J. Hall, then, Capt G. E. Gill, Adjutant, facing company.
