Possibly not the right forum to be asking this, but as I am going to buy the Rolls Royce Armoured Car to compliment my Desert Vickers (so much for giving up collecting he mumbles to himself). I may as well get a suitable base/display matt.

I've been looking at both the JG miniatures and Build-A-Rama 'desert' bases and whilst both look good to me in the pix, I've never seen them in real life. Anybody got any opinions of one over the other? Or is it just a case of picking the finish detail that I like because they're both equally good?

Jules, they both look good but for me JG stuff is superb. I saw a Desert layout of theirs in London in December and it really is top work that I doubt you'd be disappointed in. I'm sure BAR is also very good but just thought I'd give my view on JG.

All the best

Rob

I have two BAR mats and the first one came out a little dark but they may have corrected it as the landing strip looks more like sand. BAR also can customize things if you write them.

I will be getting one as well to go with my small collection of EA vehicles but Tony of K&C UK will be making me a desert terrain board for my cabinet. Look forward to seeing your choice. :)

Personally, both are OK but, desert bases are so very easy to make, and very realistically, for yourself. Celluclay/claycrete or a stuco compound will do or sand coloured paint with small amounts of sand will give you the effect you require. Using some form of scenic bond will allow you also to add extra fine sand where and how you want it.

This will mean including a base of foam board and a wooden base a dio that costs peanuts and, allows you more in your budget for thise items you want.

I do not buy or have any mats .....probably because of space they look very well done though...most of my displays are in glass cabinets with shelves about 15 ins by 15 ins......with my EA sets I sprinkle sand on the shelf and add JG desert rocks and palm trees ........looks good.... hopefully I will never have to move .....;)
