This morning I was at an "Ikea" furniture store and made this great find. A slim, wall mounted display cabinet with glass shelves, designed for storing DVD's or Videos but I think it makes a splendid cabinet for the collector of single items or small sets. The shelves are too small for tanks or other large military vehicles, but they work great for artillery sets (cannon with crew) or a group of 8 to 12 foot figures or about 5 mounted figures. I have a few pictures attached to show how it looks like and some samples of various Britains figures to give a better idea about the size.

That is pretty cool looking. What do those cabinets run?

$99.99 a piece + tax.
I think that is a good price, not too expensive.

That pretty cool Konrad just what I am looking for. That would be great for those one off pieces and sets !!!!

Yes, I sure like it a lot.
If there is no Ikea Store close to you, most of their items you can buy online too.

Konrad,

I'm confused.

Is this a picture of one set of shelves or a picture of two sets of shelves.

One looks like it's set inside a "cutout" of the sheetrock and flush mounted.

The other looks like it's face mounted with about a 4" lip in the sides and a door on it.

Is it my eyes, the angle of the photo, or are there 2 shelves?

Their both great, but one that looks inset in the sheetrock is really my preference.

Huh-----one or two?

:D It is one shelf, Mike.
The difference is by "door open" and "door closed".
The door overlapses about an inch and a half on each side and with the angle of the photo it makes it look like being flush with the wall.
Hope that explains it :)

These are what I use, and I'm very happy with them (I have 3 in the study). Ikea have released LED strip lighting that will fit in these cabinets, so that's the next step ...

Wow, my eyes are really bad,

one looks "flush" mointed, inside the wall, inset into the sheetrock, and the other looks like it's mounted on the surface of the sheetrock.cabinet%203.jpg

I guess it's the angle, either way Konrad, they look great and the price is really right.

I saw these at Ikea as well. They do make nice displays. I believe you can even buy additional glass shelves so you can get more figures in it.

Ikea is really a neat store, it has all kinds of interesting shelving units and items for a den or office.

Your unit is terrific, as is the wonderful picture you have next to it.:)

I have four of those shelf units. One for 1/72 planes, two for toy soldiers, and one for 1/43 diecast cars. The shelfs are adjustable for diferent size displays.

Thank you,
the prints from Robert Griffing are very nice and the shop who did the framing for me did a great job.

Sounds very interesting. I will have a look at that next weekend.
Thanks for the hint.

It is a great idea to put wonderful print into a den to set the mood! Make it

a place you just don't want to leave!:)

Konrad, thank you for showing these shelves. They look great.

No problem! For googling purposes, the strip lights are called "DIODER", at least they are in Australia. See http://cebas.ikea.com.au/prod_templ...se_id=37&page_id=93778300251009&Cat=9&Scat=37

I'm planning on having a look this weekend. They come in sets of 4 strips, each 25 cm long, so I'm thinking two at the top of each cabinet (plenty of room - 30 cm wide. Being LEDs they shouldn't give out much heat at all and given that they'll be spread over a reasonable area, the light should be reasonably diffuse. Not sure whether they'll be bright enough to do justice to the lower shelves - might need to put some half way down too. Anyway, the experimentation should be fun.

Regards

Todd

Unfortunately, I cannot find these units on the IKEA website or in the US 2009 IKEA catalogue - Only in the 2008 catalogue. I am afraid they have been discontinued in the US.
