Display Cabinet For Limited Space (1 Viewer)

Hi Andanna,
I just searched the website for this item, it is called Bertby, and while the ones in black/brown or white finish are not available for online shopping, the ones that are white body with birch front are shown for online ordering. I have a picture attached.

LED lights purchased and installed! I have two adjacent cabinets and bought a set of four strip lights and a seconnd set of four circular lights. The lights from each set can be interchanged, so I put two circular lights at the top of each cabined and 'boosted' the light with two strip lights on the lower shelves. Obviously shelves with bulky objects (eg Tunisian Tigers) block a lot of light.

I ran the strip light wires inside the cabinet from a hole in the top of the cabinet, so I can adjust their placement if necessary. The round light wires are taken through the top of the cabinet. The transformer (they're 12V DC) is in the ceiling. Each set of lights was AUD70 - not bad!

I'll try to post some photos soon.

Here you go. The first row of strip lights is fairly obvious from this angle. The second row less so (under the vickers/blitz shelves).

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

Todd

Todd, that's an attractive display you have there.

Are your cabinets set into the wall or is it just the camera angle?

Thanks Oz! It's probably a bit hard to tell from the photo, but there's a mix of K&C, Britains, Figarti, Collector's Showcase (the 88) and the odd del Prado figure too. All North Africa and early war FJs. There's the odd bit of other stuff in there too (e.g. Africa Star with 8th Army bar).

The cabinets aren't set into the wall but mounted on it. Part of the effect comes from the camera angle, part from the fact that the door of the cabinet extends about 4cm from the cabinet all around. I like the design because none of the hinges etc are visible from the front.

I have five of these cabinets in total - one more in the study and two in the dining room, so I obviously like them!

One more tip - the glass shelves seem very tough, but I'm reasonably paranoid so some of the original shelves have been replaced with thicker glass (e.g. under the Tiger).

You can squeeze in a couple of extra shelves beyond what Ikea supply - getting the shelves cut isn't a problem, but Ikea don't (or at least they didn't when I last asked) sell the pins that support the shelves separately. Solution - small bolt with three nuts screwed down to the head and some thin plastic tube over the top to stop the shelf rattling.

Thanks Todd, apart from the lights, I think the lighter color you chose helps brighten up the display. I rearrange my display(s) on an almost daily basis so I went for an open display style and acquired several custom made pine bookcases. However, having seen several attractive glass fronted cabinets on this forum I am now thinking of getting some new closed in cabinets - more expense  :D

Open display was never an option for me - 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son! I've even thought about putting some sort of latch out of their reach! The doors on these are held shut magnetically.

As far as cabinets go, these are definitely on the cheap side - a couple of hundred bucks I think. Still, that's a nice tank you could have ...

My youngest is 16 and long ago lost any interest in dad's toys...ahem, I mean Military Models ;) In fact he's now looking to buy a good second hand 1:1 scale Holden Commodore, which is of course the car that most Aussie youths want as they're cheap and fast

Thanks Rossim1!

I am really happy with how the cabinet lighting turned out. It was pretty straightforward work for a good result, so I'd encourage others to give it a try. The lights would work in just about any cabinet. The LED lights are amazing - virtually no heat at all, and a 'bright' white colour so the colours of the soldiers all look right.

I do indeed like the AK and Eighth Army ranges. I also like the early war fallschirmjager and hope that their mass-retirement recently doesn't mean that we'll see no more of them! (Please Andy ...)
