Just back from Hughenden Manor in Buckinghamshire. The country home of Prime Minister of Britain Disraeli, set in lovely grounds and filled with pictures of his family and that of Queen Victoria who apparently adored him it was a nice morning visit. So distraught was Victoria when Disraeli died (and forbidden by protocol to attend his funeral) that she made her own pilgrimage there two days after the funeral and walked the route of his funeral procession on her own, then spent time sat alone in his office remembering her close friend.

But Hughenden has another very secret History, for it was here that all the maps used for bombing Nazi Germany were made. Produced in an old Ice House in the grounds of the manor they were then copied in the basement of the Manor and then Dispatched with great haste and secrecy to Airfileds all over Britain by Tilly or Motorbike for forthcoming bomber raids over Germany. Apparently Hitler put Hughenden at the top of his Target list, however the nearest he came to hitting it was a V2 that came down in nearby woods , the photographic experts worked in total secrecy and safety on their maps from 1941 until the end of the War. All the maps of the Major raids in WW2 Dam Buster raids,Peenemunde etc were produced in this scenic and top secret location.

Whilst not a whole days visit, for anyone in the area who has a couple of hours to spare its well worth a visit. It is surrounded by lovely grounds, has a walled Garden and shop/restaurant etc.

Sounds like a nice day out Rob. Britain has some wonderful country homes, estates and castles that are well worth a visit.

Can I ask why Victoria was not allowed to attend the funeral?

Apparently mate a Monarch was not allowed to attend the funeral of a commoner, very sad really because she loved him dearly.He is buried in the Church at the foot of the hill the manor stands on.Inside the Church Victoria had a memorial erected to him, the only time a Monarch has done such a thing. The house has many pics of Her,Albert and the family that she gave him.

Hi Rob,

You must have had a relaxing Saturday visiting Hughenden Manor with Mrs. Rob. It is a very impressive stately manor, so I thought it worth posting a photograph from the internet. It would have been a crying shame if the V2 was on target.

Cheers, Raymond.:)

Hey Raymond, thanks for the pic mate, especially as we forgot our camera!. :smile2:. We did have a lovely visit and the Sun shone today which was very nice.What I really liked was the fact that not knowing anything about the manor we went along and found that it played a huge role in the bombing campaign of WW2,how cool to just turn up and find something so interesting.As my wife said 'WW2 just follows you around doesn't it' !^&grin
Yes good job the Nazi's were lousy shot wasn't it!:wink2:

Cheers

VICKY !!! {eek3} Blasphemy !!!!! At the very least Victoria, and please don't refer to the current Monarch as Liz or god forbid Betty {sm2}{sm3}{sm4}{sm3}{sm4}{sm3}{sm2}

Scott, it hadn't been abolished but such was the regard for Churchill that Queenie broke the ancient precedent for him and attended. It was the first State funeral for a commoner since 1914 and hasn't been one like it since.

I was googling looking for info on this subject and it looks like the next may possibly be for Margaret Thatcher. They usually aren't planned in advance so nothing is set in stone though.

Yes indeed, thing is with Churchill there was no question that the majority wanted it. Mrs Thatcher is a whole different kettle of fish, there are many folk not happy with the idea so as you say nothing set in stone yet,so we will see.

Must say Queen Elizabeth did a great thing deciding to ignore the ancient tradition and go and pay her respects to that giant of a man who helped keep the world free, was a good thing she did.

I would expect the queen to be there for lady thatcher whether one liked her as a politician or not (I know where I stand) what she did during the Falklands and how she did it was superb. She rallied a country and stood up to the aggressor and thats worth every respect this country can give to her when that day comes

Interesting Mitch but by no way certain, I can very much imagine the Queen not being there as whatever Thatcher did she wasn't in the same league as Churchill. I think its not so much about the good and bad feeling towards thatcher its more about precedent here. The great trouble with Thatcher is that whilst she showed the Argentinians what was what she is also seen by some as the destroyer of the mining industry in this country, there can be no doubt that she is/was loathed by great swathes of people in the North of the country to this day . Its a very controversial decision as to whether she gets a state funeral, wouldn't be surprised either way.
