I want to start this thread to see if other do the same thing that some times I do. Have you ever bought a K&C Set looking for just one figure out of it for your collection or diorama ?

I personally have done this a few times with the following sets:

NA 29 - The Prisoner Vignette - I wanted more of the French Guard

NA 87 - Seizing the Colors - I wanted the wounded French Line Troops

WS 65 - The Last Stand - I wanted the Wounded German Soldier

Has anyone else done this ?

I have had some luck selling the extra pieces off to other collectors or on Ebay. It is funny to go through the expense (temporary sometimes) to just get one figure !

This is just a collector question and to see if anyone is as crazy as I am about K&C figures ! ;)

Ron,

For me, it's usually the other way around. I have bought single figures to fill out a set. I've found out that selling single figures (unless they're really rare) or buying them is cheaper than otherwise. I haven't had the luck you've had in reselling them on ebay.

Brad

So you just buy a single figure and wait for the other appear on Ebay sometime ? That must be a hard way of putting a set together !

You would be surprised on how many people will be a "reasonably priced single figure" - heck I bought the WWI German Tank Figure - FW34 - because I thought he looked cool !

I did the same thing ! I forgot to mention that set - as a matter of fact was able to get full use out of that set - because I put the figure with my American Revolution diorama - but, that is another VERY GOOD EXAMPLE of what I am talking about. That BR 54 - Supply Wagon goes across several periods - even HarrytheHeid used it with his Streets of Old Hong Kong figures.

Good call - anyone else has one to mention ?

Ron

Hi,

Interesting thread. I bought DD058 just for the motorcycle. I love motorcycles. Planning to sell the other three because I felt spoiled because I bought a set for just one figure.

But then again it is a nice set and the Germans are the prisoners, so still thinking.

I'm thinking to buy the BR054 supply wagon just for the wagon and horse. Would be nice if K&C did more Nap supply wagons or an artillery train though.

My most blatant purchase of a set where I really only wanted one figure was from DD52 ( The Lord Lovat set ). The figure I really wanted was the bagpiper and I've used him from everything from Dunkirk to D-Day.

And that my friend is why we buy toy soldiers!

Yep - I bought that one too ! Just for the German Prisoners - sold the others off. Funny, I didn't realize how many times I did this !!

There always seems to be a figure or two that makes you think about it - then ... bang, you go ahead and buy it :D

Everytime I do that - I am always glad I did.

Myself I don't break up sets.I would by a single piece but I won't break up and sell sets.Seems like they should always be together.

Interesting thread, I used to buy individual figures when they were available.

There used to be a couple of folks on Ebay that broke up sets to sell

seperately. Then I changed my buying habits and I no longer look for singles.

I enjoy keeping an eye out for retired Series Arnhem, Vietnam, and wood and

resin pieces. There are so many terrific items in release now it is quite a

challange desiding what to buy.

From a retailer point of view I would rather not have had the motorcycle in set DD58. There are some who just buy M/C's.

I started off with cherry picking singles on eBay but changed to complete sets when the freight charges went up a year or so back as it doesn't cost much more freight for four figures than it does for one.

Pretty much all I buy is single figures. I've purchased several from split sets or that came with an AFV (the standing Marine that comes with the Iwo Jima LVT comes to mind). I am the odd collector as I don't buy AFVs or build dioramas -- but prefer theme displays -- Uniforms of the ACW for example --- or the Battle of Waterloo -- or the US Army and Marine Corps from the Revolution to the present. Because of this, I rarely want more than one or two figures from any group/genre. For that reason I really like to see at least one or two individual figure releases in each new release -- rather than all sets. It also means I tend to prefer the most representative figures rather than ones represeting the oddities or exceptions. And, frankly, times being what they are -- I can stretch my figure collecting budget further with individual figure releases.

Right now looking at my collection or about 200 figures (about half K&C) there are only 6 sets -- one Iwo Jima Marines, One Lord Lovat Command Set(which dont look much like Lovat or Bill Millin), and four Gun Crews (two K&C Napoleonic, and two ACW from Other Manufacturers).

I bought half of WS65 (the wounded german and the crouching officer) on Ebay. However, now I wish I had the whole set as it is one of the best four figure sets produced by KC. It just has that look of desperation that you need for a Fall of Berlin scene. Since then I have bought complete sets, you never know when some of the figures you don't like as much might fit in perfectly with a future dio.

I always buy the complete set and if a particular figure stands out to me I will either buy a second copy of the set and take out the figure (s) that I really like or want to use in a diorama or try and find individual ones for sale on eBay.

Sometimes I buy single figures from broken sets or just plain broken figures that need to be repaired so I sometimes get them dirt cheap. Of course later on I find I like the missing figures and want them as well. (see signature below)It seems I just can not win.;)

Ah, the good old "orphans"

I have done this before too- I bought the same set of Germans you mention Ron and then sold off the other two volksgrenadiers. I have no problems with buying singles from other sets though. Last year I bought the Egyptian attendant with the embalming jars from one of the mummification sets (AE07).

If I had to pick one set I think is going to see a lot of this happening with in the future, I would say DD98(?). Wouldn't be surprised if collectors buy a lot of those sets for the German casualty figure and then try to sell the BRO trooper off.

In fact, now that I think about it- this was how I got my first Figarti figures- bought a couple "orphans" modern figures and am quite pleased with them.
