Why not try a "Card Model"??
Go to
www.fiddlersgreen.net , they do an "Airspeed Horsa" and a "DFS 230"; both in "indifferent" scales. However, at $5.95 for the download, it could be a lot of fun.
Print it out in colour, then do the sums (math) find a part of the "kit" which you know has a measurement from the specs (supplied by the site) divide the measurement of the original by 30 and you know what the "model" bit should be. Go to a professional Photocopy shop and they should be able to tell you by what % you have to "blow up" the sheets you downloaded.
OK, its not that simple. Usually one has to do a 2 or 3 step process, with cutting and juggling to get to 1/30th scale. The results are worth the trouble. However, be aware that you may have to "modify" the kit to get it to work in 1/30, and you will need to introduce extra bracing to get a sustainable structure.
When you have finished glueing it together, get the paints out and fill in all the join lines etc (careful matching should produce a good model) As the final thing, take the whole model and give it a good spray with flat varnish. Evens out the colours and gives it structual rigidity
Have a think first about whether or not you really need a 1/30 Horsa- the wing span on the model is just a smidge short of 3 Feet!! [actual w/s 88 feet] (wouldn't fit in my "Soldier Cabinet" [the DFS 230 is just a fraction shorter than the Horsa!])
I have done a couple of DFS 230's in 1/32 scale, and the results have been very satisfying. One of my modelling colleagures has done 3 submarines in 1/30 scale, one of which was "blown up" from a 1/250th original.
There is also a nice genleman named Currell, who has a website, and he gives away [yes, I mean for FREE !] beautiful card models of both the V1 and V2 in 1/32nd scale. With a little imagination and work you could have a battery, for a fraction of the cost of the products of a "nameless" Chinese manufacturer.
"War along the Nile" go get the card model of the Gunboat "Melik" and
"blow it up"
Regards,
Bob
