W. Britain #20099 British Zulu War Royal Artillery Gun Team No.1 "Desperate Escape"

I bought this on eBay a week ago for under $200 including shipping and Tax.

I have a few Zulu War figures and this caught my eye, a massive piece for sure.

Does anyone have this in their collection and know when it was released? Thanks, Andy

It’s a beauty and iconic for the Zulu series. I was busting to get it back in 2014. There was a delay in its production due to it being too heavy for the base which included the gun. Apparently the base was sagging, so the answer was to leave the gun off and offer the gun separately including a separate base. I purchased two, with one modified by my model maker, removing the hanging British soldier and the Zulu passenger. So glad I have them. You will get heaps of enjoyment owning this magnificent piece. Robin.

Great photo shots from both of you, the Backgrounds add so much !!!

Robin, who made some of the Mtd Carabineers besides Thomas Gunn, like the Bugler on white horse? Thanks, Andy

The Bugler was made by Heritage who unfortunately are no longer in business. They did half dozen horse figures and several foot figures which I was lucky enough to obtain at the time. The bulk of my collection is from Britain’s, but I have been supplementing lately with JJD. TG have also have made their presence. Let’s hope JJD do some more mounted figures. Robin.

As always Robin, the size and scope of your collection is amazing 👏🏻
Andy, I too have this Britains set along with the other Artillery sets in the series, though I forget how many years I've had this particular set.

I have it, boxed up in storage in New Zealand. It will say somewhere in small print on the box when it was released. they will have a c20?? date in small print. I think it was around 2014 or 2015. You seem to have got it for a good price that's for sure.

Great addition to your collection! I have an old WB catalog from 2012 and this item is featured in it, so I'd say this was originally released around 2012 or so.

Thanks for the info. When are you going back to New Zealand? Andy

Thanks for the date, sounds about right. I am surprised a few of these are turning up on eBay so many years later and at such a low price compared to what they originally sold for, Andy

Robin, what year were the Heritage figures produced?

I hope JJD adds to the Natal Native mounted figures, as they add variety to a set up.

and I have no words for the Mounted British figures in your photos, except Magnificent !!! Andy

Not for a few years. We are duel UK/NZ citizens and own houses in both countries. I hope to retire and move back probably in 2028 or 2029. I have over 10,000 metal toy soldiers spread across both countries and hope one day to bring the collection together.

Andy, Heritage was marketed through Maison Militaire UK which still operates today, but has dropped its Heritage line about ten years ago. You could contact them and see what goes. Their sculptor Martin Tabony was a contributor on this forum and maybe contactable and prepared to do some commission work for you. Worth a try, the Zulu range while only a few, are very nice. Interested to hear how you get on if you proceed. Robin.

Few more of my older photos 2013-14. Robin.
