Books and articles have documented how prominent dogs were in civil war units. Until Britains makes one, does anyone know where I could find a 1/32 scale dog that would complement the camp scene in my Britains civil war diorama?

Tamiya also makes a German shepherd in 1/35, which I think is included in their farm animal set, and I think it's also included in one of the German infantry sets.

I have one cast in white metal, solid, but I don't know who made it. I think I got it off eBay years ago.

Actually, I did a quick Google on "tamiya farm animal set" and found this eBay auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/TAMIYA-35128-1-35-MILITARY-FARM-ANIMAL-LIVESTOCK-SET-/260645262531

I am reminded now that apart from the Shepherd, there is also what looks like a puppy, or a smaller dog, lying down (just let him lie! :D ).

I recommend this set, anyway. All of the animals in it are useful to have in your stash for future use.

Try an eBay search, too. You can find a lot of hollowcast dog figures, like old Johillco or Taylor & Barrett, as well as other makers' figures, and solidcasts, that might fit your bill.

Hope that helps, prost!

I just checked at Tamiya's USA site and it looks like the livestock set is still in production:

though they have no article description post. So, you should be able to order it online directly from Tamiya, or find it in your local hobby shop. $7.75 is a pretty good price. It's listed at $9 on Tamiya's home site in Japan:

http://www.etamiya.com/shop/tamiya-35128-tamiya-livestock-p-7236.html

but shipping from there would probably be prohibitive. There's a nice pic of the painted set, though.

Prost!

.....
The first German Shepherd didn't arrive in the U.S. until 1906,
so not historically correct if that is your goal for a Civil War
diorama. I suppose it could be bent and repainted a bit.

I recently finished the Tamiya 1/35 shepherd to go with some of my 54mm figures. Here are some images for the size comparison.

I think he looks slightly smaller than he should in life, but he was unbeatable at the price ($2.50 Australian for the kit).

He would look good with a Great War German pilot figure.

You really have to keep your wits about you in this hobby in terms of accuracy.
I would never have thought twice about whether or not there were in German Shepherd dogs in the US at that time.
Shows you how difficult it is to try and recreate the past accurately.
Thanks for that interesting piece of information.

Dog breeds and breeders fancies have changed over the years so a dog we know today may not have looked like that 100+ years ago.
