I have been looking at some of the dio threads here and many of you say that you painted the surface and then "dry brushed" on a different color. What does it mean to dry brush something?

Thanks, as always

Zach

Zach,
Drybrushing is a technique used to lightly go over an item with the intent on adding a slight color variation to it.

I could demonstrate it easier than describing it, but here goes; when I paint a building, the last step I do is I take a wide brush, dip it in a light tan color, then go back and forth on a piece of paper until about95% of the paint is off the brush, hence the term drybrushing.

I then lightly go over the building with the almost dry brush and this allows me to aply paint to the building to highlight it, add a weathering to it, etc, etc.

It is commonly used to go over a tank once it's finished to add weathering to it.

Hope this helps........

Absolutely! Thanks for the quick reply! Now to go give it a whirl!

Zach,
You need to experiment with it, the goal is to go back and forth on the paper until almost all of the paint is off the brush; if you take too much off, you can always go over the item again.

What you need to be careful of is having too much paint on the brush, then you end up with a tank/building with TOO much paint on it via drybrushing, which unless you quickly wipe it off with a cloth, you'll have overweathered the item, then you need to do damage control.

I speak from experience unfortunately...........

Zac,

The pigments remaining on the brush when brushed lightly should pick up on the raised surfaces.

The brush I use is a No.4 paintbrush that I trimmed so that it is flat across the end of the hairs. It is only slightly stiff.

As Warrior says, go easy!
